Here's some amazing news for folks who wanted to upgrade to the iPhone 3G S, but didn't want to pay the full price and sign a new contract: AT&T just announced via its Facebook page that it will be extending its upgrade prices to current AT&T customers who purchased an iPhone 3G last year and aren't yet available for upgrade prices (that would be all of you). And if you've already pre-ordered your iPhone 3G S online, you should expect an email from AT&T alerting you to a nice refund. Even better news? If you purchase a new iPhone 3G S at full cost, you won't have to sign a new contract. That's right baby, "commitment free."
Check out the "early upgrade pricing" when you read more.
The iPhone 3G S early upgrade prices will be $399 for the 16GB model and $499 for the 32GB. These prices will be posted on AT&T's website tomorrow, June 18. Although full retail prices will remain the same at $599 for 16GB and $699 for the 32GB iPhone 3G S, you'll now be able to buy without a contract. Today's announcement gives iPhone customers who are upgrade eligible in July, August or September 2009 the ability to upgrade for only $199 or $299.

Not sure where to ask this, but is there any discussion of making a Sugar App for the iPhone?
1Sweet. So let me get this straight...since I got my iphone 3g last year. I will be able to upgrade to the 32gb Iphone 3GS without renewing my contract for $299?
2JessaG I don't believe that is true. If you pay over $99 a month for service and were due to be eligible for the upgrade in July, August or September they are going to go ahead and let you do it Friday. I believe you still have to sign up for a 2 year contract. To find out if you are eligible call *new# and AT&T will send you back a text message letting you know when.
Since I'm on my husbands family plan they only apply like $10 a month to my subsidy which means I'm hosed for qualifying. At least we will only have to pay a lot more for one 3G S instead of two. My biggest problem with this whole thing is the way they advertise it. If Motorola came out with a new RAZR today they wouldn't announce that the price of it is free. They would have a price and then it might be free with certain carriers that choose to subsidize the phone. If the phone is $699 just say it's $699.
3I second the Sugar App. but if you do, PLEASE make one for the pre also.
4Phone plans are so confusing! I wish they reduced the rate plan, then I could consider getting a replacement for my lost iPhone.
5That's the early upgrade price they have been offering me since they announced the 3G S. I still don't want to pay $200 more than the price they are offering new customers. I know I sound whiny, and I signed a contract. I am more than willing to sign a new two year contract. I have been a AT&T (Cingular) customer for years. Their upgrade policy drives me nuts. I bought the first iPhone at full price...I upgraded to the 3G...I would buy the 3G S at $199...but for an extra $200 I will sit this one out.
6Thanks for clearing that up SB Marilyn. I get so confused with phone plans, it is crazy. Honesty, the only things I would actually care about with the new 3gs is the 32g space, but I always have my ipod classic with me anyway, so I keep all of the movies/music and such I don't have on my iphone on that. what can I say, I am a sucker for apple. So I don't think I can justify spending money on a phone, when I am still loving my 3g. Perhaps it is just time for a shiny new case.
7You can call *NEW# on your AT&T cellphone to get a text message about your upgrade eligibility. Sadly, I'm not eligible until 6/2010.
