After chatting with a friend on the weekend, who got nailed with a $130 after getting caught chatting on her cell phone (California law requires you to use a hands-free device while driving), I've decided to show some love to the Bluetooth devices. Just like Nadya Suleman, my friend is going to have to invest in a hands-free device. Since she's a bit of a fashionista and doesn't want to use the standard earpiece included with her BlackBerry, I feel like it's my duty to offer up some decent suggestions.
Although the first headset pictured here is a Dolce & Gabbana H700 Bluetooth Headset by Motorola ($73), I had to force my friend to ignore the D&G label. The headset is too big and the shiny gold is a little over the top — definitely not geek chic in my book. Instead, I recommended this sleek Jawbone Bluetooth Headset with Noise Assassin ($74) to her, which is still stylish, and offers amazing sound technology.

1The Plantronics 925 is the best headset I've ever used! Best sound and most comfortable to wear. Believe me I have tried many, many headsets including the Jawbone pictured above. The problem with the Jawbone is it has to be in proper contact with your cheek or it doesn't work very well. It is not that comfortable or easy to wear either. Incoming sound on the Jawbone is rather quiet as well so it can be hard to hear your callers. The new Jawbone Prime suffers from the same low incoming sound.
The Plantronics 925 comes in colors and has a storage case with a battery that can charge the headset if you're away from a plug or USB port. It may look a little strange (I personally like the looks of it), but it gets the mic closer to your mouth which is essential for good outgoing sound.
The best thing is to get your headset from somewhere that you can return it if you're not happy. You may have to try several before you find the one that suits you best.
2I can't believe the amount of people I still see driving around with a phone up to their ear. Law or no law in your state... FGS get some type of earpiece. Of course the people I see with the phone driving, are also the same ones I see putting on makeup and reading while driving too.
3I have had the D&G headset since it came out. It was a present and I love it. It's actually not so tacky looking in person!
4I just have an itty bitty little Jabra cheapo one and I really like it. The sound isn't super fantastic but I'm only using it to make some non-important calls on my way home from work so I don't care... I'm not paying over $50 for one!
I don't think it works with my new phone, though, which is annoying, so I guess I'm in the market for a new one, too.
5I had the gen one jawbone and didn't really like it. It didn't block the wind or noise like it said it would and they hadn't perfected the noise assassin feature so if I turned my head that little nub strayed from my cheek and the person on the other end couldn't hear me at all. I have given the third gen (prime) a chance and it is amazing. While it still doesn't fit my ear as snug as I'd like (I blame my ear because most headsets don't work) people can hear me in loud areas, in wind, when I turn my head, etc. It is great!
