Happy Kindle DX day! Today, the third-generation of the Kindle — the DX — starts shipping from Amazon.
The Kindle DX is the biggest Kindle so far (the display is 9.7-inches), which is good and bad, depending on your needs. On one hand, it makes it less portable, even though it remains slim, but on the other, you can read books and newspapers more easily — and you can finally read PDFs.
Not only that, but textbooks should be available soon, and its high price tag ($489) is set to be subsidized by a few newspapers. All in all, it's a strong offering for an eBook reader.
I'm in the market for a Kindle but am not sure quite when I'll be buying, but I'm curious to see if any of my readers are taking the shot on the Kindle DX today (or any other day). Tell me, will you be joining the celebrity throngs who've gone Kindle?

Nah, I prefer my purse sized one.
Can't wait to hear if some other readers plan on
getting it!
1I'm not interested. I have a pretty red Sony.
2this looks so large....
3i love my kindle 1....i think i might even like it more than the 2...i would love this one if i was in school...or if i did a lot of cooking. i bet it would be better for cookbooks. i pretty much read novels exclusively on mine so i'm good with what i have. i did notice that one of the series i was working on had some maps in it and i couldn't read the maps at ALL
4Nope, I'll stick with my K2. It fits nicely in my purse and I have a gorgeous Bayou Sunset skin on it.
5I have the smaller one on my wish list. Hope that I get it next week for my birthday!
6So many orders have been placed for the DX that mine won't arrive until Monday even with next day shipping!
But I'll be patient.
It is pretty near impossible to easily read big manuals, reports and work docs on the smaller Kindles. The DX will make my life (I hope) a lot easier. At the very least it will save me trying to cram 20 pounds of books into a backpack! If I were mostly reading novels etc. I would stick with the smaller versions.
7i will only buy one when it's backlit and in color!
8I'd give it a try with a less price. Subscription based pricing makes sense for something so new (few years) and also something that just had a release only a few months back. That's WAY to close together to pay full price just to get slapped in the face with a new one a few months down with improvements. That, just sucks!
9I am still resisting, but I have been thrilled to see so many on my commute. I think I'll wait another year or two before I jump from paper to paperless.
10I would love to get one, but sticker shock is holding me back. Maybe when the price comes down.
11My Sony Reader was a decent alternative to the K2, but I am hoping the DX's larger format will do a better job with manuals, forms and figures. If an 8x10 page when scaled down to DX size is legible, I'll be really happy. I think the K2 is a better choice for general reading due to portability.
12i have no immediate need for it, so no. but i wish i could just get it, for the heck of it.
13I'm sticking with my sony ebook reader 505. It fits in my purse, is lightweight and I love the display.
14My Kindle DX arrives tomorrow. The K2 is more or less perfect for fiction, but I have thousands of pages of geeky tech documentation that will be more comfortable to read on the DX. Finally, and end to wedging my laptop between my boobs and my knees!
15I guess it's good for textbooks and newspapers/magazines, but it's completely useless for me. I'll just hold on to my Kindle 1.
16I would love a Kindle but have been put off by the price. Not just the reader itself but the actual books. You'd think with the saving of paper costs etc, they would cut a deal on the book prices to make them more attractive than buying the actual books.
17I found this site that is selling the kindle 2 for 199$
18" brillance: Looks so large"
thats what she said
