When I came across Wired's Top 10 Ways To Provoke a Geek Argument the other day, I had to laugh. This has totally happened to me! I once got into a discussion with a friend about the pros and cons of the Xbox 360 verses the PS3 which turned into a heated argument real fast. Not that I care, since I enjoy both, but my sparring partner had some serious attachment issues to his PS3 that I was not prepared for.

Have you ever been involved in a heated geek argument? I know they happen quite often when talking about tech, so tell us: what's the weirdest geek argument you've ever been in?

I once had a serious, hour long discussion over who would win in a fight between Star Wars universe and Star Trek universe. I picked Star Wars.
1Mac vs. PC... it got ugly, ironically just like a PC.
2I've gotten into arguments with PC gamers (I'm mainly a console gamer) and it's been fairly amusing at times
3
Surreal Hippie!
4Mac vs. PC here too. Hasn't happened in years thank god. PC IT guys would just lambaste me with the lamest stuff.
5i had a fight about watchmen ...
6Heh. I had an hour-long discussion of the physics involved in the premise of Space:1999. With my girlfriend.
7@ sontaikle - gotta watch out for those PC Gamers, they are pretty passionate!
Aside from the usual mac/pc argument (im pro-mac), I got into a few tiffs with the Network Security guys about social networking. They can be such a harda** about that stuff.
8I get into comic book arguments all the time... it's always the DC vs Marvel debate.
9iPhone vs. iPod Touch... seriously. And why it's "stupid" to get an iPod when you can just get the phone! I tried to explain that some ppl already have a phone they like, or a carrier they don't want to leave (because Rogers is brutal!), but my friend remains convinced that there is no need to even manufacture the iPod Touch because only idiots would buy that instead of just getting the iPhone. We agreed to disagree
10Haha I get into fights about comic books and about Apple. The weirdest was probably with the guys who say that comic books aren't a girl thing and they pointed out how there are no good ones with girl superheroes...
11Role-playing games are always good for a geek argument.
12"It's a N95-1!"
"No, it's a N95-3!"
and
"You're such a gadget freak." "No, you're a gadget wh*re."
13I just had a argument of "what's the meaning of "bleh" and "pff", is there a difference?, etc, etc.
when we were discussing it, a friend came by asking, "I don't even know what rotfl means" (we speak Spanish, ubt still...) we pause or discussion to explain the web words to him.
14Gods, I get into the Mac vs PC debate a lot too. In one forum I hang out in, the PC guys come over to pick fights often. It's obnoxious.
Bri
15C++ versus Java. Star Trek versus Star Wars. Various rules in role-playing games.
An ongoing one with a friend right now is World of Warcraft versus other MMOs.
16My biffle and I got into a long heated argurment over whether I was allowed to say "n00b" or "133t" since I'm not a gamer.
17I was telling my bf that tmobile had improved in the last 2 years we haven't been with them and he kept saying verizon was still better. I was like, "i'm not arguing that." I swear, I hadn't even mentioned verizon.
18I frequently argue that Matrix: Reloaded is a fine film on its own, and would be much better if Revolutions had been any good at all and properly tied up Reloaded's plot threads. My boyfriend strongly disagrees and is in denial that there were ever any sequels to the original Matrix.
19Pc vs Mac.... WOW vs online game on text
20and ipod touch vs zune
all the subject with my classmates lol
only my bf and i use mac
I wasn't in the argument myself, but my brother and father had an argument about the new Star Trek movie. I just stood there looking like the cool one.
Also, weffie, I agree with you (as an iPod touch owner).
21WOW vs. EQ (i vote EQ), star trek vs. star wars (i vote star trek), comic books are for kids, anyone who plays D&D still lives in their parents basement (i pay bills and have a full time job jackass)...my list goes on forever haha
22Mine wasn't weird for its content, it was weird because it wasn't with my husband, who is my usual geek argument partner.
Basically, when Fable II and Fallout 3 were being released, the clerk at Hastings tried to BS his geek-cred and kept repeating how Fable II wasn't released (that's what we were there to buy) and that they were having a midnight release party for it a week later. I told him no, the release party was for Fallout, as we were planning on attending, and he stood there for ten minutes arguing with me that Fable II was not out and that's what they were holding the release party for.
I told him that not only had my cousin and one of my best friends bought Fable II from Wal Mart already, but that one of them had already beaten it. He told me I must have the wrong game, or Wal Mart broke contract and released it early because, once again "We're having the midnight release party in a week".
I finally sighed, and said "Dude, turn around and read the ENORMOUS SIGN that says FALLOUT THREE midnight release party, NOT FABLE TWO. YOU WORK HERE, how in the HELL can you not understand this concept?!"
I then told him I wanted a manager because he obviously wasn't capable of reading, so therefore he certainly wasn't capable of dealing with over one hundred dollars in merchandise.
23lizzyopal - Amen! Amen, AMEN! I love WoW, but EQ owns my MMO heart, and I believe EQ II is the best MMO to date. I am totally a Trek girl, and most of my family still plays D&D, including my GRANDMOTHER. All of them have worked full time jobs, raised kids, etc. except for the younger generation (me, my cousins, my brother), who are just getting started on our family and our lives, but most of us have either full time jobs, are in college, are raising kids, or are still in high school.
Sorry, just had to say I totally approve of your geek-debates.
24We are kind of still in discussion with my fiancee oh the ropic whether 0,999...=1.
25I believe it isn't, because it will forever be approaching but never approach one. And he is gathering mathematical formulas to prove he is right
well, my ex never could understand that i liked the mac platform and though it did limit my gaming possibilities, why I wouldn't want to scrap it for parts. also, amiss a similar conversation...the difference between a ding and a ping.
26We have some version of all the other geek argument topics, but we call them geek fights. The weirdest continuing geek fight is the required proper procedures for fighting Zombies in our community verses the required proper procedures for fighting Skynet.
27I'm a girl gamer who is addicted to world of warcraft, i get sick of arguing with people that there really are woman playing many of the girl char. on the game not just guys playing them.
Most guys just can't accept a lvl 80 shaman having a real woman controling it so they tell me i'm not one.
