And the news we've all been waiting for, ladies and gents! The brand-spankin' new, third-generation iPhone: the iPhone 3GS.
The iPhone 3G S looks externally exactly like the iPhone 3G — same dimensions, same availability on black and white — but inside, it's a whole different story.

The first thing you want to know: yes, the iPhone 3GS can take video. The camera supports still and video capture — you just have a record button now. You can also scrub through and edit video directly from the camera!
The still camera itself is beefed up too — it's now working with 3 megapixels, autofocus, auto white balance, and auto macro. They've added low-light sensitivity, and a biggie: tap-to-focus, which lets you tap on a subject in your lens that you want to focus on, and it'll blur the background.
Besides the awesome new camera features, the new iPhone is also coming with better battery life, Nike+ support, and Voice Control. Voice control is amazing — it not only lets you say the name of your contacts to call them, but it also works with your iTunes so you can listen to specific songs, start your favorite playlists, and even tell it to "hear more songs like this" when combined with the iTunes Genius Playlist.

The new iPhone 3GS will come in white or black, in 16GB and 32GB flavors, and will cost you $199 and $299, respectively. But for all you late adopters, Apple is making it easier for you to enter their world by offering the current 8GB iPhone 3G model for only $99. When is all this happening? The $99 pricing for the 3G begins today, and the iPhone 3GS comes out June 19.

Omg. Omg. Omg. I need it!
1My friend who just got the 8gb iphone for $199 a couple weeks ago is not going to be happy about this ...
2Yeah, I'm buying one too. It will cost me $500, but it's worth it for these upgrades. Video camera, 3 megapixel pics, compass, and a faster processor.
The question I have is, will AT&T let me tether this to my MacBook Air? I am waiting to see!

3Every year I say I'm not going to stand in line. Guess where I'll be on the 19th? Damn you Apple, this is a really good hardware upgrade. Much more significant than last years. I'm VERY excited.
4Oh man. I kinda want a $99 iphone if I can hack it somehow to work with my carrier. (I mean, um, I'd never think of doing something like that.)
5They finally have a decent camera and I don't want one anymore. I've played with my friend's and apparently I don't have enough electricity in my fingers to get it to respond all the time.
6FINALLY! I have been stuck in my Verizon contract for 2 years and it's finally ending this month... iPhone here I come!
7Way to hose former iphone users, ATT. Not only am I not eligible until 2010 for the new iPhone even though I bought my iPhone 3G the DAY it was released, I have to pay $499 for it. Super.
8I am SO happy that I didn't buy the 3G last year. My original iphone is now 2 years old, and I am ready for the $299 upgrade.
9Still with the AT&T? I'll pass. It's not worth breaking contracts or leaving my current carrier - I get a much better deal - and I'll still save money every month.
I do like the new features, though - except I would have thought they'd be on the iPhone LONG before now. Apple's usually pretty ahead of the curve - what gives?
10The way it was last year if you were an existing AT&T with the first gen iPhone you were exempt from upgrade issue. "Anonymous's" comment concerned me so I called. They told me that my husbands was eligible for upgrade July 13th and mine wasn't eligible until March of 2010! Mind you I've never taken my phone in or changed service since I've had my 3G the day it came out. I'm hoping they get this straightened out as I do not want to pay $499. The best part of the phone call is she told me that Apple hasn't released a day for a new iPhone yet. I'm beginning to think AT&T doesn't quite have their stuff together
11Pretty cool, but I think I'll be happy with an upgrade to 3.0. Or at least, I have to be happy with it, since my iPhone is still pretty new.
but by the time I am eligible for an upgrade, it'll be even better!
12ahhh i REALLY wanna get this new iPhone but the $499 price tag is what could possibly hold me back.. i wish they could let us upgrade early again!
13I think it's sucky that they aren't using the same rules as last year if you are already an iphone user because if you think about that means that all those who upgraded to 3g last year can't upgrade till after July 11 so why did Apple go for a June 18 release date. It makes no sense and I'm thinking that between today and next week they will change the rules for current iphone owners. As it stands that means not many will be able to upgrade except of course those who had the 1st gen iphone or are coming to at&t for the 3gs. We'll see what happens.
14I have had a BB with att and been waiting until this release to get the iphone! I have been a longtime mac user so I am super psyched for this release. Since I haven't really needed a new phone, it would have been a waste of cash for me to upgrade before now.
Let this be a lesson to your friend, hokiepokie. Only buy new technology when you need it, and follow the market and only buy products that new to the market.
15I have the 1st generation iphone, so I´m very excited with this new one! hope it comes to Mexico not too expensive =S
16I am not happy about the high prices for current 3G owners and I know that the 3G was subsidized but if I have to wait to get the 3GS I might as well wait until the next new phone after this one. I also don't like that MMS is taking so long.
17I'll keep my 3g and update next year, when the 4th iPhone is released. Hopefully, by then it'll be offered on a different carrier.
I'm sick of AT&T gouging us...and the fact that they're not one of the 29 carriers that will have MMS available at the time og the 3.0 launch...and they're not one if the 22 carriers offering tethering on the iPhone.
For shame AT&T. You're a disgrace.
18I'm not updating because I don't find the upgrades significant enough. Jailbroken phones have already had video and voice and a bunch of other crap. I'll wait until they come correct. Looking forward to the 3.0 software update and for AT&T to stop sucking big time!
19Its way to expensive, No--voice commands, compass, video recording/editing, auto focus are exclusive to 3GS so what could be fun of buying it, I will wait for 3G updates and check my apps i.e Vopium, strip and call of duty performance on it and if it really makes a difference then i will decided about 3Gs.
20I'm on the fence. The whole $499 thing is ridiculous. And the fact that ATT won't have MMS and tethering is a another nail in their coffin with me. I was with T-mo for seven years until I bought the 3G last year and I'm not impressed with ATT service at all.
21I'm so glad it's coming out soon! I don't have any problems with ATT, and all the features people are complaining about - tethering and MMS mainly - really don't matter to me much. My ancient Motorola is more than ready for a replacement. I suppose this whole thing is a love or hate relationship with ATT/Apple.
22Gosh, BabyGirl - you get so much for $500 dollars. It seems worth it to me to have a pocket camcorder and a faster processor. I just disagree.
This is an evolutionary phone, not a revolutionary one.
23Hmm, I have an interesting dilemma. My boyfriend and I weren't eligible for an upgrade for iPhones until July 12, 2009. I decided to change our rate plan for our family plan from 1400 minutes to 700 minutes, just to try it out and see if we could survive on 700 minutes and have a cheaper bill; if not, I’d switch back to 1400. I called Customer Service to ensure our upgrade dates wouldn’t change (we have been stalking that date since forever, so it’s been embedded into our memories) and he assured me it wouldn’t. Well, it did. My boyfriend called 611 freaking out about our upgrade date change from July to December 2009. Lo and behold, someone put a ticket in for our date to change and somehow in a matter of only a day and after waiting for a year, we were eligible. So of course we went straight to the nearest AT&T to get our 16 gig 3G’s on May 18th, after debating with the customer service reps there on what happened after talking to Customer Service at Corporate. We waited a day for the notes to kick in their system and came back on the 19th. We asked around about the speculation regarding the new iPhone and no one seemed to be able to provide an answer other than, “It’s all rumors and BS.” But one of them was ascertaining we had 30 days to return the 3G and if the new one came out in June, we could return and trade up for the 3G S. So, after calling the rep we dealt with at the AT&T store… we’re off to AT&T today to return our 3G’s, return to Blackberry Curve’s for 10 days and on the 19th, go back for the iPhone 3G S’s. My question is … will we be able to return the 3G’s for the $300 price tag we originally paid for each phone? I mean they should honor it since it’s what we initially paid, it’s on our receipt… I’m just worried because AT&T caters to Apple and if Apple dropped the price… I feel like we’re going to get effed over. Will we be able to get the 3G S’s at the upgrade price? I’m just wondering what you all think… the reps at AT&T kept saying to come into the store today and we’d be able to work stuff out, but I’d like some insight beforehand. Also, do you all think there’s going to be a crucial line where people will be camping out for the phones? The guy we have been dealing with at AT&T said he’d save us two boxes, but I’m just curious if anyone is going to camp out. & Spacekat, I wonder the same thing! I wonder if I will be able to tether it to my MacBook Air! I've been trying to look around and see, but no one has answers yet.
24Wanted to update in case anyone had the same issue my friend did - if you purchased your iPhone after May 9, you can either get a refund of the price difference between then & now or you can upgrade to the new one. That comes from an AT&T memo.
