I tend to rely on Google Maps a little too much for directions (that or GPS maps on my iPhone). But every now and then, I decide I want to mix up the trip and take a different route. Sometimes I'll just move the travel points on the map to change the travel route, but I never know if it's an effective way to get to my destination.

Well Google has just announced that you can now access alternate routes under the Suggested Routes heading in Google Maps. What's great is that the suggested routes aren't just "alternate travel routes" but directions that actually make sense for a variety of reasons, including cost, distance, travel time, and more.

I noticed this the other day and I love it! I'm always using google maps to compare different routes, so I like that it just shows the other route (and time) when you hover. So convenient.
1I am very happy about this.
2Are you in Seattle, GeekSugar?? If you are, we're neighbors!
3This is GREAT.
4I noticed this the other day looking up routes from LA to San Francisco. I really appreciated this for Memorial Day Weekend-- I wanted to bypass the route most people take [usually the fastest, but not on a long weekend]. An awesome and much-needed addition.
5Hi TinaDenali! Unfortunately not, down here in San Francisco. But still very close! Glad to hear that this new feature has been really useful for most of you already!
6I noticed this the other day too! I love that Google is constantly improving their services!
7I read it, but think that doesn't work that way...
