Although I tend to want a fresh copy of a newly released game to enjoy myself, I have noticed that since the economy has gone south, I've been perusing the used game bins more often. And apparently, I'm not the only one. According to recent numbers released by Gamestop, their profits are up 13 percent, and a majority of that is thanks to their used game selection.

I like Gamestop's trade-in program (I've traded in tons of games myself) and always get a pretty good return. It's because of this (and customer loyalty) that helped used games make up a whopping 49 percent of Gamestop's profits this quarter. Since trading in and buying used is easier on the wallet (not to mention good for the Earth — hey, it's recycling!), it got me wondering — do you find yourself stopping by the used game aisle at your game store more often?

I usually buy used games if they're available anytime. I've never had a problem with playing a used game.
1I buy used games. They work just as well for a lot less. What's not to like?
2I always buy used games, unless I'm a really big fan of a certain game or I just have to have it now & don't want to wait for someone to trade the game in.
3I almost exclusively buy used games (I don't see the point in paying more for something when you can get it for less). The only time I buy a brand new game is when I *have* to have it and there aren't any used copies.
4I always buy used games except if they're made by my company. I have my Game Stop Edge card. It's $15/year and you get 10% off used games and movies and get 10% more when you trade in your games and movies.
5Yeah, I didn't vote because I've always bought used games when available.
6I've most deff had the occasional problem with used games. I'll buy them sometimes, but I'll also wait on some titles till they come down to a reasonable price point. For a high quality new game, I have no problem paying full price.
7I don't buy games used from Gamestop, or stores like it. It makes me so angry that they give me $5 for a game, then turn right around and sell it for $35! I know they need to make a profit.....but it annoys me none the less. The used games aren't much cheaper than buying the game new. They're only five dollars cheaper than the new games every time I've looked.
8I still buy new games, but I don't really buy games all that often, so I buy it new because I know I won't be buying another new game for a while.
9I have always bought used games because I did not understand why I should shell out $50 for a game when more then likely in a month or so it will be at Game Stop and I can get it cheaper!
10It's not a surprise that their profits on Used games are so high. If customer A purchases the game new, then returns it, and customer B purchases it used for 5$ less than customer A, they're looking at quite a profit. They have very little expenses for used games, just those meager amounts they pay out. For all their new games sold, they're almost doubling their profits.
Consider why Gamestop employees push the Used games so happily and eagerly. It's 5$ less typically. You're giving them 35$ extra for a new game that costs 40$.
40$ (new) -5$ (sell back) +35$ (used) = 75$ profit (minus whatever they pay to the game manufacturers).
