While at a BlackBerry Storm event the other night, I couldn't help but notice the lack of business cards being exchanged between industry types. And while chatting with another blogger (who is as obsessed with phones as I am) about the upcoming E3 gaming expo, we agreed we should meet up while we were there. As I was fishing for a card to give her, she instead asked for my Twitter name and told me "business cards are so last year."
Is it true? Are business cards being put out to pasture by Twitter? I mean sure, I check my Twitter daily, and post updates as much as I can, so theoretically someone could get a hold of me via Twitter. But just the thought of not getting someone's card who is a potential industry contact kinda baffled me. It seems that Twitter is embedding itself deep into our professional lives now too. How do you feel about the new Twitter world domination?

Well, in other fields (non-tech), I would say business cards are still de rigeur. I can't see a lawyer in the near future giving out his or her twitter name rather than a card. Actually, I don't even follow any other attorneys' twitters, other than personal friends, and I consider myself relatively tech-savy/early adopter.
And in Asia, it will take years to uproot the business card. Mingpian much more important there than here!
1I think business cards will be around for a while. In the larger picture, very few people use Twitter.

3While Twittering is an integral means of communication for the Net Generation it isn't for the over 40 age group. They're resistant to being so plugged in. Business cards provides a means of traditional contact information that allows us to communicate when we want without it feeling so envaded. I am of the generation where "Silence is Golden" although I do admire the intensity and the high maintenance management that Twitterers can handle!
4I can't see Twitter replacing business cards, but I could see including your Twitter name on a regular business card as well as phone numbers and email addresses.
5Twitter replacing business cards? I don't think that will happen anytime soon. Gosh I don't like twitter in the first place which still shocks my friends since I am the geek in our circle. Its too evasive.
