A recent AT&T study found that women are catching up with men when it comes to cell phone usage, but men still spend more time on their cell phones than women.
I happen to think this study, which was part of a yearly Father's Day poll commissioned by AT&T, is at the very least skewed. Most of my female friends would stay on their cell phones all day if they could - while my father, boyfriend and male friends seem to only reach for the phone to plan, check in and check out.
According to the survey, which polled approximately 1,000 users, men average 458 minutes of monthly wireless phone usage, and women average 453 minutes. I think it's safe to assume the reason some people talk on the phone is related to personality type, not gender.

I would presume it has less to do with personality and more to do with occupation... there are probably a lot of businessmen who are on the phone all the time for work. Businesswomen do the same, but let's be honest -- there are more men in business than women. I would hope these people spending over 400 minutes per month on the phone are doing something work related - otherwise how would they have the time to talk so much?!
1My husband works from home a lot and uses his cell phone to communicate with his coworkers. So maybe there were a bunch of telecommuting dudes on the survey.
Plus, men do talk less, but they might possibly make more calls? Since your charged for an entire minute once that minute begins, then minutes add up pretty quickly. If they're ordering pizza, finding movie times, and things like that, then the minutes could add up like that.
2I agree, julieulie, you said exactly what I was thinking. I also hear of a lot of people doing away with their landlines in favor of cell phones, so that may also contribute to the rise of female usage of the cell.

4Even though I'm a woman and the world's largest cell phone manufacturer is from my country, I've always disliked talking on the phone. I don't use phones unless it's an emergency. I don't think it's a gender-related issue.
5Agreed julieulie, it's more of a business thing. But, I know if I was pitted against my boyfriend, he'd win by a landslide- his cell phone rings off the hook all the time. Then again, we both moved far from home and he's more plugged in to his family and friends back east, whereas I only check in on mine every month or so.

12I have to go with the personality theory. I HATE talking on the phone. I don't know what to talk about, I'm worried about how I'm coming off to the listener; it's not fun for me. And I once dated a guy who absolutely loved talking on the phone. He was excellent at it. He made sure there weren't any awkward silences. So ya. It depends on personality.
13I think its many factors: occupation, personality, gender, location, whether there's a landline. I personally share 700 mins with my boyfriend. We both average about 250-300 a month. My boss uses a lot more because a lot of the time I have to reach him on his cell. my father, doesn't use his cell except for personal use and only uses it about 200 mins a month, my mom uses hers abou 100. It just depends.
