This morning in NYC, Amazon's founder and CEO Jeff Bezos officially announced the Kindle DX, the larger-screened (9.7 inches large) wireless reading device. Unlike the Kindle 2 (which holds up to 1,500 books), this bad boy can be filled with 3,500 books with its 3.3 GB of memory. It also features an auto-rotating screen, a built-in PDF reader, and the battery life is said to last four days with wireless on and two weeks when it's off.
As you can probably guess, the bigger screen makes it easier to read books, newspapers, and magazines. And so far, five universities have already agreed to test it out, and three major newspapers will pilot the Kindle DX for a reduced price (the New York Times, Washington Post, and Boston Globe), so that subscribers will sign up for longer time periods. Bezos also revealed that Amazon has signed a partnership with three of the top textbook publishers that account for 60 percent of textbook sales.
You can preorder the device now (which is said to have a Summer release date) for $489.

I reallly hope some of my textbooks for the fall will be available!! Then I'll be able to carry my cute totes to class and say goodbye to my bulky backpack!
1I want a kindle.... I can't tell you how many bags I've broken carrying too many books.
2I will only buy an ebook reader if it's implanted into my palm and turns on/off when I blow on it.
3I wonder how much textbooks will cost in digital form... In other words, how much can they gouge you when their content is electronically distributed and no longer incurs printing costs?
4The cost sucks. It would be cheaper to buy a netbook and carry that to classes.

8i agree that the kindle is way to expensive. its a $500 book that you then have to pay to actually get a book to read on it. I'd rather carry a paper back for $7 than the thousands it'll cost to read stuff on a kindle. Or theres always the library which is free.

10I'm still not sold on the regular Kindle, much less a big screen one. I don't think my obsession with owning books (I refuse to borrow from the library and rarely borrow from friends) would be satisfied with a tiny thing like that.
11Remember--if you lose your Amazon account, you lose access to every single e-book you downloaded from Amazon! That's right, they TAKE access to books YOU PAID FOR.
But that's not stealing. It would be stealing if you bought paper copies of the books and they took them out of your backpack.

13WHAT. $500? Are you joking?!
I mean, I like the idea of the Kindle DX, and I've really been trying to not waste so much paper [I am a religious newspaper reader, I love having the print in my hands!]...but obviously no major company is actually hurting in this recession, if they feel like $500 is a fair price. And that doesn't include subscriptions and downloads!
That is more than some HDTVs or almost any game console, or even the amount of money to set up an account with AT&T for an iPhone for two years! Absolutely ridiculous.
I will soon be a poor grad student...this would have been nice to have, but certainly NOT for that price.
14As an avid reader, I can't tell you how much I enjoy mine. I've had all three. And, I can't remember what my life was like before the Kindle. Yes, it's expensive. Over the course of time, you will recoup the money that was spent though. If I was grading on a scale of 10 bookmarks, I would give it 11!! Absolutely Love It!!!
