Whether you've lost your job or are just trying to be more conservative because of the recession, everyone could use little tips for saving money.
Did you know that you can put your Netflix account on hold if you need to? Maybe things are crazy but you don't want to outright cancel, or maybe you're planning a trip and don't want to waste the money.
To put your account on hold, just go into "Your Account" from your Netflix homepage. Under "Your Plan" in Account Information, just click "Put on hold."
Make sure the day you set it up is the day that you want the hold to start, and pick your reactivation date. Also make sure that all of the DVDs they've sent you have been sent back.

I didn't know that I could do that. I've put Netflix on hold for a year b/c I was travelling a lot and didn't want to bother putting it on hold and then reactivating. This is good to know.
1I've done this a lot, sometimes consecutively so i don't have to cancel and lose my queue.
2I was soooooooooo happy when Netflix implemented this! I remember even in 2005 (i think) they didn't have it and I suggested it because I didn't want to cancel and lose my queue when I moved, but I was afraid that I would lose a disc with the address transition (and didnt have time to watch it anyway).
I've definitely used this several times.
3huh - i didn't know about this and it makes a LOT of sense. granted it's really not that much money out of my pocket but i have noticed that there are months that i just don't watch movies and could use that $20 back for something else

8Great point and very interesting food for thought. I'm not sure I have any clients I can replicate this with, but will bear in mind for the future. Regards
9now I'll stay tuned..
10You all should be aware that putting the account on hold does not act in the way you think it does. Common sense tells you that Netflix locks the billing cycle and moves it forward until you reactivate. Not true. If you start an account and are billled, then the very next day put it on hold for 29 days, when you come back you will not have 29 days left on your cycle. You will be billed again for a new month.
All it does is put a hold on services. If you are in the middle of a billing cycle, you just lose that money. I called and asked them, the guy was confused and put me on hold, then came back and credited me for a 50% discount for losing two weeks of my cycle to a hold.
11Darwintron, wow! I had never expected them to hold my payment for their service. I mean, I am still a subscriber and still have all my information in their database so I think it makes sense that I would still be charged. Everytime I've used their "hold" option I did it because I was moving and didn't want discs to get lost. Even though I wouldn't be getting their movies for two weeks, I fully expected to continue paying for the service.
No offense, but if it worked the way you suggested, they would absolutely lose money! Then anyone could just put their account on hold until they felt like renting a movie! I don't blame them for not adapting that awful model.
