I cannot deny that having an extra battery pack when you're in a pinch is delightful, but most of those pinches occur when you're on vacation and have very little packing space. The DS Lite Battery Pack that Gizmodo uncovered this week is plenty cute and green alone, but when connected it nearly doubles the fattness of the DS, making it slightly less portable and well, rather unsightly. The Mobile Survival Kit (seen at right) is also pretty oversized, but can charge a small army of devices like your PDA, GPS, iPod, digital camera and even DS lite.

I'd love a giant universal battery for long trips.
1i remember when cellphones came with a briefcase for the battery. that was rad.
2I could see it being useful for a long trip like on a train or plane or something, but for most use its okay to leave it charging at night.
3I got a similar battery pack for my iPod a few years ago when I went to a summer camp for two weeks without power sockets to charge it. It doubled the size, but was better than going music-less.
4i use the AA battery charger from iGo with the interchangeable tips. it sucks the batteries dry pretty fast and the device really should be turned off to make the best charge from the iGo, but i works great for airplanes where you are not near any power ports and while travelling you can always pick up extra AAs. lightweight.
