Although it looks nice, mounting a flat panel TV above your fireplace can take years off of its life if you aren't careful. Aside from possible smoke damage, your new LCD or plasma screen was built to run at a specific temperature (check your owners manuals for exact specs, but usually between 32-100°F), so watching a movie and building a roaring fire can actually damage the components inside your TV if it gets too hot.
Thankfully, all is not lost. If there's no stopping you from mounting your set, there's a quick test you can do to find out how hot your fireplace will get. Attach a thermometer to the spot you've chosen to mount (tape and a cheap thermometer from a drug store will do the trick), build a fire, and let it burn. After a few hours, if your chosen spot is getting close to your set's maximum operating temp, then you shouldn't burn the fire and watch the tube at the same time, or choose another place for your TV to call home.

The thought of this makes me cringe.
It's the same idea that you should NOT center your room around a television (especially if you have a fireplace).
Yikes.
What a waste. Just hang the TV elsewhere and enjoy your fireplace sans glaring screen.
1I agree syako. I think it is just plain tacky to hang your TV above the fireplace.
2i thought that was obvious and laugh every time i see it in magazines and then in people's houses. haha.
3I'm think I'm hard-wired like a guy. I have great taste in decor, yet I actually WOULD center my room around a large tv. =)
4Sy, I'm glad you said that! I hate when people do that. It doesn't look good and it's usually hung too high so you have to strain your neck to watch television.
5Good to know, thanks geek!
6Not everybody has a huge space and can just put the TV somewhere else.
7I was told you wouldnt want to hang a t.v. over a wood burning fireplace, but a gas is different. I think having the t.v. above the fire place gives it a nice clean look
8you just need to watch how hi you place it.
This common practice of hanging a tv over a fireplace has never made any sense to me at all. When I see it in my friends' houses, to this day all I can do is stare in silent disbelief over how ridiculous it seems. I just don't understand why someone would buy a nice piece of electronics and specifically hang it over an area that has been designed to HEAT UP an entire room. These same people might as well store their cell phones in the oven if they don't bake, or use their stove top grills as a desk for their laptops if they don't cook. Fine, I'm obviously exaggerating my point. Hanging a tv over a fireplace is clearly possible, everybody does it, and if you don't use your fireplace much to begin with I guess it doesn't really matter. It just seems so darn...counter-intuitive to what one would naturally do to prolong the life of their beloved little tv set.
