Do you fear commitment? Is the only thing you don't like about the iPhone is that it's on AT&T? Well AT&T themselves are basically solving that problem, by offering the iPhone 3G with no commitment for $599 and $699, as this leaked picture obtained by The Boy Genius Report shows.
Though it looks like you do have to be a customer to buy the iPhone contract-free, you won't be in a contract with the carrier, if that's what's been holding you back. It's a very tempting offer, especially with the 3.0 OS update this Summer (but I also wonder if this means that iPhones are being cleared out because there'll be a new device coming).
Still $600 — and $700 — is a hefty price to pay for a cell phone, but then again, plenty of people bought that baby in 2007 when $600 was the price.
Where do you stand?

600 for a cell phone huh well I would pay that much if the 600dollars covered my monthly payment for a year!! Pay 600.00 and have no monthly payments for a year!! Now that sounds good!! Thanks to this article I just realized I pay$1400.00 a year for service wow !!
1I wouldn't pay $500 with a contract!
2Whoops $600!
3I actually like AT&T so I don't mind the 2-year contract extension. I've been with AT&T for YEARS. I've seen it gone through 3 name changes. Bell South Mobile >> Cingular Wireless >> AT&T Wireless. I might as well own stock in the damn company lol
4Dustin I like at&t also gesh you have had at&t for a long time! I don't remember them ever being any other name! I think the I phone sounds really cool I use a blackberry curve I just don't know about the touch screen what if it has problem than what you can't use your phone huh!!
5Plenty of people in Asia are paying more than that now. They were paying about the same price for the unlocked iPhones, but since the iPhone has been available properly (Malaysia tomorrow, Indonesia in a couple of days' time), those prices have been accepted, form example, in Thailand (True) where I am.
6why not just get it with the contract and then cancel it. the early termination fee shouldn't be as costly as getting the phone without the contract.
7"why not just get it with the contract and then cancel it. the early termination fee shouldn't be as costly as getting the phone without the contract."
because if AT&T finds out you're doing that, they'll charge you.
8Only if I can get it no-contract without being a previous customer. I do not like AT&T and while I would love an iPhone I will not switch and sign a contact with this carrier. For me, $600 would be worth the phone and no commitment to AT&T.
9I was going to make the same comment as labelle.
The other thing I don't get about this is you're still tied to At&T- so what's the real benefit? I paid $650 for my Palm Treo over 5 years ago but it was unlocked and I could use it on any network. Contract free and unlocked are not the same. Maybe I am missing something?
10No way.
11I would really love an iPhone. But again, the problem for me is the fact that AT&T is involved in this process at all. I have had some pretty major issues with them in the past and everyone that I know that has had AT&T has had the worst experiences too. If AT&T is still the provider... NO thanks.
12hell no! definitely not worth it. MAYBE like michelina25 said...without a monthly bill for a year. but I'm sure that would never happen... so, no.
13I don't know exactly how the business works there but mine is the paid 500€. It's more expensive to have it otherwise
I'm going to kill some Apple dude if after 3.0 OS update I have to pay even more $$
14Ok I lied and feel bad. It was 600
15a verizon iphone would be bomb.. but not for $600
16Nope. The iPhone in Mexico is 10,000 pesos (714 US DLS aprox)and doesn't come with any plan. You have to get pre-paid cards and I think it's waaay too much for a phone. I know it's not ANY phone, but still I think that's an abuse.
17I have a regular phone plus my iPod touch which it wasn't that expensive.
