You don't have to be Catholic to celebrate Mardi Gras today, and you definitely don't need the excuse of Lent to give up a habit. CNET suggests giving up Facebook, and even has some guidelines for how to do it.
I don't know that I'd give up Facebook, as I'm not painfully addicted, and I certainly would not give up my Twitter, since I feel like I'm just getting started. What I could give up is using my cell phone in places it might not be appropriate, and trying not to have meaningful conversations over text messages.
What I definitely am too addicted to give up are my TiVo, whipping out my iPhone to solve all my problems, and playing video games to unwind. Some things are just non-negotiable.
So tell me, if you had to (or are going to), what technology would you/could you give up? What could you definitely not?

This is hard. I'd maybe give up playing the Wii or downloading torrents.
1omg. i don't know! this is super hard! def. NOT my blackberry, rhapsody, my iPod, DVR, twitter, or facebook....
hmmm.....maybe texting? calling people instead of texting? yeah...that's what i'll go with....
2Since my cell phone is my only phone, I can't give that up. I'd give up my social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. I could also give up my DS... and I love my DS.
3I only have 1 cell phone too and we don't have a land line so I couldn't give that up.
4Can't give up the cell - no one has the house number and who knows where that phone is anyway (its not charged wherever it may be!). I'd give up social sites, but I'm not addicted so really, it's not giving up anything. If it would be anything it would be using the macbook while watching TV. LOL
5I would give up texting or tweeting. I think anything else would just be unreasonable. Cutting texting would be really hard though. My phone was on the fritz this Sunday and I couldn't text. It was a very rough day.
6I can't give up my phone, I don't really use social networks much, I only have a few channels on the tv so that would be easy to give up.
7Other than that there is just the internet and this site, and I'd rather not give up either of those!
Is it sad that I will give up wine and bread, but cannot give up my technology? If I had to I guess I could give up my iPod.
8Hmm, I would probably be able to give up some of my social networking accounts like myspace and facebook... maybe even my ps3 but I definitely couldn't ditch my DS lite or my foxtel
9I *live* on social networking sites, it's what I hope to make a career out of studying...I would give them up entirely, but I just don't have the desire to. Maybe I can start with just some days, like giving them up Monday-Friday. Facebook is a big weakness for me, even though nothing happens very quickly there [that probably means that's what I should give up, right?].
I don't use too much other technologies besides the Internet that often...my Wii has sat unused for almost a month, the PS2 and Guitar Hero for 4 months, I don't own a smartphone, I don't text much, and nobody calls me anyway unless it's something immediate.
Maybe I will give up all non-essential Internet diversions. They take up a LOT of my time, and I seem to be kind of addicted to them. Possibly being on the Sugar Network might be in that cut...@_@
10er.. the remote? Yeah.. I could use the exercise.
Man I could never give up my gadgets.
11i could give up tv for 40 days. done it before actually. but with everything available online it's not really giving up anything. oh, i could give up im at work. might make me more productive. haha
12I couldn't give up Facebook, so much of my family lives far away and Facebook is how we all keep up on each other's lives, I could give up Myspace, I could probably handle giving up tweeting too.
13My brother always gives up listening to music in the car. NPR is the only exception, because its not all that enjoyable.
14I could give up my cellphone and just email people or text them through gmail instead. Actually the only person I can't email is my dad, and I would probably just write him letters which he would prefer anyway.
15The only non-essential technology (essential meaning my phone) that I use is the internet and the television. I'd be more willing to give up the television.
16I would give up TV. Or internet at home (using only at work). It would be really hard, but that's what Lent is about - making sacrifices that aren't easy.
17I would give up my Ipod and playing games on my Xbox and DS so I wouldn't cheat.
18I don't game, or play with my iPod much. I suppose the most frivolous thing I do is spend time on websites not associated with work or my health. So I guess I could give up the sugar sites and Perezhilton if I were to give something up for lent. Good thing I am a Buddhist.
19Ipod, I'd miss it but I'd use CDs in my car.
20how about you just shoot me? lol i CANNOT give up my ipod touch, nor facebook, nor myspace..def not my sweet Berry(my name for my 8320) or Toshi....(my name of my toshiba laptop)...SEE how attached i am..i NAME my gadgets? okay okay if i HAVE TO HAVE TO it would be my wii. i play it every so often when my friends come over. okay that is it- Wii for $500 Alex!
21twitter. I can live without it, but it's become part of my routine.
22I could easily do myspace and probably facebook at this point. I was on facebook way in the beginning, and it has changed so much I really am beginning to take the "that is so five years ago" stance. It says a lot when you're grandmother is on it
