Although I was smitten by the bright and rugged Olympus Stylus 790 SW I was still afraid that I would drop it on a recent skiing trip, and shatter it to pieces. That or end up cracking the screen while hiking in the sierras. Either way, I was still gingerly handling this baby like it was made of glass.
Certainly, I'm sure I'd feel that way about any gadget, but the newest edition to the Olympus family wants you to know it can take a beating.
The 12 megapixel Olympus Tough 8000 has a name that says it all — tough. Waterproof up to 33 feet (hello scuba diving!), freezeproof up to 14 degrees, and crushproof up to 220 pounds, this is the true take-anywhere-cause-it-still-fits-in-your-pocket digital camera. Plus, you can drop this baby all day long, and it won't break, since it has a 6.6 foot drop threshold. If you want a camera that is going to stand the test of time, this is the one. Don't get me wrong, it's an investment at $400 dollars, but it's sure to be worth it.

We have the Olympus that you mentioned above and love with, I got it because we have a toddler and I do tend to drop things. When it's time to upgrade I'll definitely be looking at the newer version.
1With 12 MP!?!! Yeah that's worth 400!
2I always beat up my electronics
Sounds great - but I want a cheap/good pocket camera. I have bulky camera. LOL Wish this one was cheaper in price.
3If I had a spare $400 to drop for a camera, I'd totally buy this one.
4i totally agree - 400 is kinda too much for me to be dropping on a camera. what a good idea though! i like the waterproof too. if nothing else, it would nice to know if i drop my phone in a puddle or get rained on wicked hard that it is going to be cool.
5If this had geotagging and Eye-Fi made a card that would work in it, it would be mine.
6Olympus' are always more expensive than the usual point and shoots, but if you think about the the features it brings to pocket-sized camera's, it's well worth the price. Plus, if you remember not too long ago, point and shoot camera's were this price for 3.2mp when they were first released... and Sony Cybershots are STILL being sold for this price, without all the incredible features.
I am definitely grabbing this up for my boyfriend since he is clumsy! Haha
