The spectacular Times Square New Year's Eve celebration is already going to be that much more entertaining this year with the bigger Times Square LED-covered ball, and now Duracell has announced that they will power the ball with batteries charged by people.
They've recently built a "power lodge" in Times Square, which features rows of bicycles with generators that are connected to massive batteries. Visitors are able to take part in the pedal power that will provide enough power for the batteries to last 10 to 15 minutes during the live show. In total, Duracell is expecting 230 hours of visitor participation to reach their power goal by Dec. 31. Talk about going big and eco-chic!

This is awesome. My undergrad university would power our big events in the quad with bicycles/humans for the stage and sound. It is good to see this type of thinking outside of hippie schools and festivals.
1Brilliant PR.
2That's so cool. I wish that I was getting up there earlier so I could participate.
3THAT is awesome and a great way to get consumer participation. Well played Duracell!
4What more could I want from a New Year's count down?
That's so cool
