I guess the soccer mom vote is not only vital to elections, but video games as well now; recently, Microsoft had a group of women host Xbox 360 parties — providing popcorn, a subscription to Xbox Live, and Scene it: Box Office Smash, with the hopes that they'd show their friends the system's advantages.
The marketing hope is not unlike the Tupperware parties of the '80s (I actually went to purse parties in college); let people test something out in a non-threatening environment. I think it's also brilliant, because for younger kids, it's often their mothers who will make the decision of whether a video game console is acceptable or not.
Wonder what would have happen if GTA IV had been the tester game. . .

1Heh - if you're willing to be yelled at for introducing people to a machine that burns your discs into unplayable $60 coasters, then this is the way to go.

drive. Does anyone even do repairs on those things? I bet it wouldn't be too hard if you could get the right part.

4I read about this the other day and, as an over-30 SAHM gamer, still haven't figured out why I find the whole approach vaguely offensive.
Maybe it's the whole stereotype of the mom/female demographic and what it takes to get them into gaming that irks me.
Maybe it's the tupperware party approach. Ew.
Scene It? Bleh. Any of the more 'typical' moms I know wouldn't justify spending the big bucks on a console just to play a trivia game. Either a console has a lineup that would attract casual gamers or it doesn't. Xbox360 doesn't.
5Sasseefrass- I hear what you are saying. Unfortunately I think our breed is rare. XBox is not really a family counsel and I think Microsoft is scrambling to try and get a piece of that Wii market. Seriously I don't know any other female gamers (well except online) that play serious games and are over the age of 30. I really can't imagine any of the soccer moms I know playing BioShock or GoW2
Maybe Xbox is just trying to dip their toe into the family thing
to see if it is worth their effort?
6Once I've played a Scene it game once, I'm through with it. And I have heard that the Halo was a burner. So I understand what *wickedcupofjoe* is taling about.
7And I just like playing simple games. Harry Potter games get me addicted everytime. I can't get off those games until I've complete them, and I'm a grown ass woman
