If only blogging was as cool as it is now when I was in college...but then again, who knows how much studying I would have done! A recent USA Today article suggests that more universities are joining a growing trend of posting "an interactive online diary and several other unfiltered student blogs directly on their homepages as a recruiting tool." What universities are hoping for, is that prospective students can get a true glimpse of campus life from other students blogging about it. Rather than just visiting links related to admissions, courses, and athletics, potential students can check out other students' opinions and thoughts pertaining to the University.
What do you think about this? A good way to help high school students pick prospective schools? Or a tad too much Girls Gone Wild for your liking?

I think it's a pretty neat tool. I think it would be cool to see a real student's experience, not one just found for marketing purposes. I also applied for a scholarship a couple of months back where you had to post a blog on a certain site on why you wanted said scholarship.

2I also wish they utilzed blogs "back in the day". It's about time technology takes over lol
3I think it's a good idea. The links to admissions, athletics, courses... never really helped me. I always like hearing from other students about their experiences anyway.
4This is a great idea! While admission information, and course calendars provide valuable information, as a student, I'd prefer to read about what REALLY goes on on campus, as well as getting a feel for life as a student at the particular university. It would greatly help me in making a decision on where to go.
5ummmmmmmm I would say no. Sometimes kids like to make the going ons on campus seem bigger then they actually are. Take my school for instance- UC Santa Barbara- a NOTORIOUS party school. Everybody thinks that if you go to UCSB you are a big partier. However that is only a tiny aspect and easily avoidable. This reputation completely overshadows some of the great academic aspects of the school. People love to talk about the party side of the school. Plus no matter how "unfiltered" the college wants to make the blog they are going to censor it in some way to make the school look good
Personally I feel that you cant get the vibe of the campus unless you actually visit it. I thought I would like UCLA but as soon as I arrived there just nothing but bad vibes

7my alma mater has been doing this for a couple of years and i think it's "cute." but JessNess makes a great point... i'm not sure how "accurate" their blogs are. i would think the university screens all of the entries. (i know when i was a freshman i was going to frat parties! not the greatest recruitment tool.) i think kids these days expect to read a blog about life at the university they are looking to attend, and if there isn't an official blog, then they are going to look to an unofficial blog that may say gosh-knows-what.
8I know incoming freshmen and prospects come in to UCD's livejournal community to get an idea of what Davis is like and it's such a rude misrepresentation.
9I'm sure they'd filter out the negative stuff, so I don't really care about this. It sounds like a way to get free advertising for the school.
