I love gmail as much as the next person, but I've always been a little perturbed that I didn't know how to compose an e-mail in a separate window. It's a little thing, I'll admit, but composing e-mails on the one window makes it harder to reference other e-mails, or in my case, focus.
How do you make life easier? Just hold down the Shift key when clicking "compose" or "reply" to pop a separate window, and search and browse your existing mail in the parent window while you write. You may need to enable popup windows from the site if you get an alert/nothing happens.

See, this is why I like the Yahoo Mail Beta. It has a feature like this and is incredibly easy for me!
1I use windows live mail these days with my paid hotmail account. I tried gmail, but it was right in the beginning and I just couldn't hang with how primitive it seemed to be. Now I see so many people using it. Too bad I'm now completely dependent on my hotmail account lol.
2I love you!!!! I too am a HUGE Gmail fan, but this always drove me crazy!
3Thanks for helping my love affair with Google continue to flourish!
GREAT! I love gmail too but this has always gotten me a little frustrated.
4Question: if you're using firefox and you have it set to open things up in new tabs instead of windows, will it still open it in its own window?
It should.
5google is the best! i have a friend that works for them and always sends me the news on the newest ideas (i.e. Flight stats for Google SMS in the US. You can text your flight number (eg AA 2111) to 466453 ('GOOGLE' on most mobile devices), and the status information will be sent back to you. You can also text a specific airline name (eg united airlines) and we will send back the main phone number to call). BUT ANYWAY, gmail is my primary account and another easy way to get the email you are currently composing in another window is by the arrow in the top right. it is on the same line as "compose mail" "send" "save now" "discard" just keep looking to the right and the arrow pops the email out of the window into another window! i use hotmail for my "sign-up-for-stuff" email address, but you really can't beat the search feature in gmail! hope this helps!
6i'm sorry if i wasn't clear before, but once you are in your inbox and click "compose mail," when the new, blank email opens you will see an arrow in the top right of the top blue bar!
7clever!
8thanks GEEK! i've wondered the same thing!
