I don't know about you, but I'm not exactly on top of it when it comes to using the "proper" image formats in stories. What am I talking about? JPEG and PNG formats. Thankfully Digital Inspiration broke it down in layman's terms so we can all figure out when and when not to use PNG and JPEG formats.
Basically, PNG files are compressed in a way that doesn't involve a loss of image data, so pictures are clear and you don't get blurring or smudging. Therefore, they are best suited for images with lots of text, line art, and pics that don't have a lot of color. The photo here is a PNG file so you can see how clear the text turned out on the left side of the picture. And if you recall the hilarious story about my mom creating a happy face in IM for the first time, what I should have done was uploaded it in a PNG format since the text from the IM convo looks blurry. Most people end up using JPEG files since they are great for photographs (good for tone and color) and don't use up as much bandwidth.

Great post GS! A PNG file also allows transparency, which won't matter to most people, unless you're doing web design.
The PNG file was created as a replacement/improvement to the GIF file. The GIF file format is patented by a company called UNISYS, so the PNG file was designed as a patent-free alternative.
1I never knew the difference until one day I saved a screen cap as a PNG file instead of a JPEG (just to see). It makes a complete difference.
2Whenever screen capping anything, save as a PNG file. It definitely keeps the quality of the picture.
Thanks, Geek & calamari.
3I had no idea! I don't think I even ever thought about it. I just normally resave them as jpg's as I figure png's will confuse my clients. I'm leaving them as is. Seriously, what a great post!
4Thanks, GeekSugar - I was actually trying to remember the difference the other day!
5PNGs are so much prettier! But too heavy for internet use, I barely use them since they're not needed for the lolcat variety of pics. If I worked in graphic desing it would be a whole differnt story.
6I thought this comic was hilarious lol
7I favor PNG over JPEG. Mostly with edited pictures and pictures with text.
