The concept of word-of-mouth seems so quaint now. Recently, when a pair of my friends got engaged, I was close enough to be a lucky one who got a phone call; later when I asked mutual friends if they'd heard the news, so many people said, "I heard about it on Facebook!"
I had a thought: Is Facebook the new newspaper? It's the easiest place to make an announcement, especially the sort you want people to know about — you're engaged, you got a new job, you're having a party, as well as the not-so-fun news (i.e., you've been dumped).
I don't think announcing this kind of info on Facebook makes you narcissistic, either — but it may not be the way you want the world to find out about your life, and this still might be too public for some people.
But tell me, have you taken to Facebook to make personal announcements?

My closest friends get the call because they're barely ever on facebook. They have yet to embrace their tech savy.
1Me no haveee facebook. Me have Popsugar
2I called and emailed family and close friends when we found out that we were having a baby and then again when we found out that it was a girl- but as soon as the KEY people knew, I put it on facebook.
3BUT I work at a college and facebook is very much a part of the college culture and since I work with students day in and day out- it was the best way to let the students that I know well, know what was going on with me.
I'm a freshman in college so I use facebook constantly. I hope that by the time I'm actually getting married or something my first thought won't be "I can't wait to change my relationship status!" A few weeks ago my philosophy professor asked the class "What do you do when you want to be very serious with a girl?" expecting the whole buy a ring, propose, get married answer, and a kid jokingly yelled- "FACEBOOK!" The professor was a little confused but the entire class burst out laughing.
4I call/email/tell face-to-face the important people in my life my big news. I almost never use the status updates.
5Nothing really big has gone on in my life up to now that people didn't know about already (graduations, internships), but I use Facebook sometimes to keep those up for people who I know and like, but don't get to talk to very often.
I actually did my senior undergrad thesis on narcissism and Facebook!
Announcements on Facebook don't *make* you narcissistic - people who are *already* more narcissistic than the norm tend to use announcements more, have more contacts ("friends"), and have more distant contacts.
6no i dont use facebook. at all
7Yup!
8I would tell my family and friends face to face and after they know I will go ahead and put it on facebook, I mean they are my friends too..I don't just add anyone on as a friend
9Don't even get me started on people who announce their breakups via Facebook and myspace. That is always sooo sad.
10i have a facebook, but i cant stand that people use it for those sort of things. i'd much rather receive a phone call, or personal email. maybe it's because i dont pay much attention to facebook and end up missing out on all sorts of things that people just assume all of their friends will see.
oh well.
11I don't use facebook, but I have sent announcements via e-mail or post big updates on my LJ. The important people get called first; LJ is just how I keep up with my friends from high school.
12i hate facebook and don't make any announcements about my personal life...ever. I would if I got engaged or was having a baby but other than that, I prefer to keep things private.
13I announce things that are big-but-not-too-personal, like registering for an Ironman, passing the Bar, etc.
I think announcing your pregnancy the day you find out is icky.
14I would tell all my family and friends personally but would probably later 'accounce' it inadvertently on Facebook by either changing my relationship status or my actual status. But I would never use Facebook as my main way for announcing it.....
15i agree with sunday...
my bf's ex-gf announced her engagement with a note on facebook - to all of her closest friends. to summarize, it basically said "i'm too lazy to call you so guess what, i'm engaged!" it was ridiculous. it didnt really affect us so much because we're not close enough to get a phone call (obviously, its his ex, lol) but if i were one of her close friends i would be furious. its pretty much saying to people - i dont care enough about you to let you know personally whats going on with my life.
16I generally don't update Facebook until I've given news to those that are closest to me. After being proposed to, I first told my best friend, then my sisters, my parents, and then told those of my friends that I see on a more regular basis. Finally, I updated my Facebook, so all of my friends outside of what some would consider my "inner circle" got the news. It the risk of sounding pompous, I have a lot of friends - way more than I'd be willing to call to announce the news. Because of this, I leave it to Myspace and Facebook to update those that I haven't talked to recently whenever something big happens.
17All the people close to me that I would want to tell anything important are on Facebook and check it often, so, it's a good way to do it.
18i don't even hardly go on Facebook anymore. I did change my relationship status and updates and all that when I was in college, but I'm kind of over it.
19Most of my friends are across the country and entirely spread out everywhere. Facebook is a life-saver for us. We can keep a lot more current with each other. If I were getting engaged/found out I was pregnant/etc I would call all of my family/friends first and then I would post it.
20The important people get calls, texts or emails. And when I feel like it, the rest of the world can see it on facebook.
21i use facebook for personal announcements but i only have close friends and family on my friends list. i used to have loads of people i knew from school and college but i got bored of seeing 'x is now in a relationship with y', even though i hadn't seen x for years, so i went on a deleting spree. it's much better because now i can put personal announcements up without feeling too exposed.
22I don't like to call people socially so I pretty much use email and facebook. Facebook is private for me cause I don't add everyone in the world.
23Im too good for those silly announcements.
24When I got engaged, I made sure my closest friends got a phone call. If it went to their voicemail, I told them to call me back so I could tell them.
25I waited until the next day to update everyone in Facebook world.
Even then, I have a lot of people I'm friend with on facebook not knowing I'm engaged (and have been for 6 months). So just because you announce it on there doesn't mean people pay attention.
facebook is fun, but it's not good to put too much personal info on the internets
26I announce frivolous things on Facebook: last night I dreamt that one of my teeth turned blue. lol
27No thanks. If those closest to me need to know I've hit the lottery, I'll call them. Social networking scares me.
