I'm trying to envision a day not so rainy as today so that I can get excited about this Bicycle iPod Speaker ($50) from Urban Outfitters.
I know the moment the sun peeks around the clouds, I can envision myself riding my bike (um, the bike I don't yet have) and grooving to my iPod. But then . . . do I see myself annoying people?
I get enough cars driving by my apartment bumping music that I can only imagine how I felt about someone pedaling past my window rocking out to Lil' Wayne. Hmm.
What do you think of a bike iPod speaker?

Meh. Unless you are riding a completely desolate road, I vote no. No one else wants to hear your music. I find it annoying and rude. The arguement of course is that people will say earphones are unsafe... well turn down the music and don't use noise cancelling ones outside..
Big no!
1First, this is a mere speaker we're talking about, not a trunkful of woofers and tweeters. I doubt this is really going to cause noise pollution. Secondly, who are these people that may be annoyed? Drivers? I'm sure drivers won't be distracted and depending where you live there are probably not that many pedestrians to be bothered in the first place.
I have tried to use my building block speaker on my bike, but it's not powerful enough of overcome the ambient noise. Anything that might have some more pep sounds good to me.
2I use a recreation path in my town, and there are a ton of people walking, running, biking, bladeing etc... and yes, its very annoying when someone has a speaker on their bike, or are walking with their mp3 or phone speaker on to play music. I don't want to hear anyone's music outside, on a train, on a bus, in an enclosed area etc... use earbuds.
3Looks pretty awesome to me.
4This looks terribly annoying!
5Good idea to me... in a busy college town, there are scooters and bikes everywhere, and it's pretty dangerous to have headphones in.
6i would say no, only because i mean if you have an ipod you most likely have headphones (
) so i don't get why you just wouldn't use the headphones???
7Extremely Creative :]
8My friend got this for his birthday, and I think it's awesome. I'll be doing the AIDS/Lifecycle (SF to LA, 545 miles) ride the first week in June, and will be using this on that ride for sure.
It is extremely dangerous and against the law to use headphones on a bicycle (it's a vehicle under California law)... just like if you wear headphones in your car, you can get pulled over and ticketed.
I think this is a great alternative, and as long as you're not unnecessarily blasting music louder than you need it to be, should bother people at a minimum. Trust me, hearing someone's music on one of these speakers is not worse than normal traffic in Los Angeles.
9OK this is crazy everyone has the right of the road or walk way ,,if a car comes by and his radio is on and you don't like it ,,you tell him or her to turn it off the law states that as long as it is not over powering its OK any way that for a cop to tell
10I own this product and love it! I've used it numerous times mountain biking with friends and while at the beach it's an awesome invention. The way I see it if someone is annoyed/doesn't like my preference of music they are too easily irritated and that's no way to live. As stated above it isn't an elabrate system of tweeters and subwoofers so to discredit it by saying it will be annoying is simply obsurd. Buy one and I garantee you'll love it; whether that be on your daily commute to work, on an aggresive mountain bike trail, or while getting your tan on at the beach. Excellent product for the money!
11I haven't used this product but I'm trying to find a good amplified speaker system to listen to my tunes! I live in the great state of Washington and there's tons of bike trails and many run next to the highways and freeways where there is no one to bother and I like listening to music as I ride.
Now before you tell me to get some head phones listen to this, headphones is bad news bears! When I'm not on a trail riding through the city I want to be able to hear cars coming up on me, as the drivers are stupid, they don't obey the laws and when they go to pass they don't move out of the way, as I've been hit many times.
Now has anybody used this yet and how loud and clear is it?
