geeksugar's Guide to Mini Notebooks!
geeksugar's Pick: The HP Mini 1000
Not only is the HP 1000 sleek and stylish, but it's packed with a pretty nice sized solid-state 160GB hard drive. Let's get serious: this is a mobile notebook, not a replacement for your full-time computer, so what will you need with a heavy 160GB hard drive?
The Mini 1000 also boasts a nice webcam, up to a 10-inch, full glass WSVGA LED display, plus a hot little interface that puts all your most used apps front and center for easy access.
Add in the wireless connectivity (and soon to be 3G access), lightweight design, EnergyStar qualifications, and you have an all-around solid machine. Plus, HP is pretty reliable, so I'd be confident with my purchase, and their one-year hardware warranty.

I love HP's products but the Mini 1000 is a little too expensive for me!
1Thanks for this article. It's nice to see them laid out side by side. Can't imagine not having an Apple though. Guess I need to start saving.
2This is the one I'm currently looking at. It was nice to see how it compares to similar products. Thanks!
3I love my mac too much.
4The Lenovo S Series (made by IBM) is also a pretty good one and also $399.

5i'm lovin the hp mini 1000!
6I like the HP...but it's *too* small for me. And I also won't part with Macs unless forced. Suppose I'd better start sticking to my budget so I can get a new one!
7I've had my HP mini for about two weeks, and I have to tell you, I am completely sold on the small size. I bought it as an emergency backup for my currently-breaking-down laptop, but now I don't use my huge 14.5 inch laptop anymore.
At first, when I opened the box, I thought, "What a mistake! It looks like a toy, it's so small." I was truly worried about it. But here's the thing: I'm a small person, 5' 3'', about 120 pounds. And I'm guessing a lot of you gals are around that size too. If you think about it, regular sized laptops aren't really proportional to our bodies. They're way too big: they dwarf your lap, and are really kind of heavy if you use it for a long period of time. When you have your laptop, think about how much space it takes up in proportion to your body!
Think about when you pick it up, how you have to handle it carefully and how you have to use both hands. And think about how you have to have a special laptop back to transport it.
I have NONE of those problems anymore. I can clutch at my laptop with one hand, without worrying that it's going to slip out of my hands. It fits in my Dooney and Burke bag, so I no longer have to go back and forth between my "work" bag and purse -- which is a complete pain, transferring wallet, chapstick, pens, etc. It's so light that I barely feel it, and I don't have to take it periodically off my lap to jumpstart my circulation again...
What I'm saying is, I think this HP Mini is great because it helped me reevaluate what size of laptop is truly best for me. I got used to the small size almost immediately, and now it's like trying to fit into my fiance's shoes when I pick up my old laptop. Seriously, I think this laptop is better for smaller people, and I can't tell you how important this has been for making my laptop experience more enjoyable.
