When a new smartphone comes out, one of the first things I look for is whether it has a touchscreen keyboard or a physical keyboard. When T-Mobile's G1 came out, I was mildly surprised that it was physical, rather than onscreen, because I thought it may be closer in design to the iPhone.
Not to be outdone, it looks like Android will devise an onscreen keyboard for the G1 as well, leaving you with both options to type. Nice compromise!
In the meantime, tell me which one you prefer, since I know that becoming accustomed to the physical keys of a phone like the BlackBerry deterred a lot of people from the iPhone because of its touchscreen.
What do you like to type on?

I had to switch from the iPhone to the BB Curve. The touch screen was horrible. I'm so much happier now.
1I don't have an iphone but when I was playing around with my sister's I found the touch screen keyboard difficult to use, I kept on hitting the wrong letters, and I don't have big fingers..
2I'm quite use to the touch screen now and love it.
3The iPhone's touchscreen isn't so bad, but the others I've tried were horrible. So even though I have an iPhone, I prefer a physical keyboard.
4The touchscreen keyboard is the one major reason why I 100% refused to get an iPhone.
Well, that and I really REALLY wanted the BB Curve. But I would have definitely considered the iPhone if it weren't completely touchscreen.
Oh well, I'm in love with my pink Curve and wouldn't trade it for the world...
5Physical keyboard all the way. Nothing beats the tactile sensation of clicking real buttons. This is the only reason I haven't considered getting an iPhone.
6I like a physical keyboard myself. My husband has an LG Voyager, and I find it really annoying to dial and do extensions or something with it (Press 1 for this..) because it locks after you dial...ugh...then you have to unlock it and stuff. I dunno. I like clickity clicking.
7i had the option between iphone and blackberry. the physical keyboard is one of the reasons why. i love my blackberry.
8I have the G1 and I love the keyboard. It will be nice to have the option to use the touch screen as well tho.
9I don't have a smartphone (yet!), but although I really would prefer a physical keyboard, I think I'd rather give that up to have the iPhone. I played around with a friends iPod Touch once, and found that after only maybe half an hour of typing notes back and forth with her, I was getting much better at the on-screen keyboard, so I think I could adapt pretty well if I got an iPhone.
10I have a sidekick, and I like the physical touch. However it isn't like i am opposed to virtual keyboad but i do think it is easier with a physical keyboard (because that is what i have =])
11I thought I would hate the virtual keyboard on the iPhone, but I'm so used to it now I love it! Plus if I make a mistake it automatically corrects it for me.
12Physical. I don't like that whole touch thing. I tried to play with the iPhone at the Apple store and it was pissing me off lol.
13I love the touch I can't go back after the iphone.
14Physical keyboard for me...I am a Blackberry Curve owner.
15I have an iPod touch, and it hasn't taken me long to get used to it. Also I have really thin fingers...lol
16I cannot STAND touch-screen technology. Aside from how annoying it is to begin with, I think the screens get disgusting.
17I've only had an iPhone and I like the touch screen. My sister had a keyboard phone, and I used it, which was good, but I still like the touchscreen better.
18I have the iphone and the G1. I type well with the soft keyboard, but the physical one is better for longer messages and lower errors. I think apple can be a bit stubborn once it decides to go in one direction. They ought to create a suite of iphones to appeal to everyone. That said, the iphone is a game changer for many other reasons.
19I'm with most people on this one; I own an iPhone and I miss the physical keyboard on my Q so much. Plus the predictive text feature on the iPhone SUCKS. But the web browsing is so much better so I'll deal for now.
20Physical keyboard all the way, preferably one with keys which are slightly concave instead of convex. I have extremely tapered fingers and long nail beds, so that no matter how short I keep my nails, I have the same "no fingertips" problem as women with super-long nails. Even though my fingers are tiny, the tapered shape makes touchscreens more difficult for me than for my husband whose hands are twice as large. Recently I had the chance to try a friend's iphone and although I liked it as a browser, it was impossible to type on. It would be nice if hardware designers would look at the shape of *women's* hands before settling on a design.
21Physical definitely. My beau has an iphone but i hate using it
22I like both if they're done well. I have an iPhone, and I love the touch screen. I've never really had an issue with hitting the wrong keys, and each one pops up when you hit it (then again, I don't have big hands or fingers. I've had friends with big hands who can't stand the iPhone). Also, you can choose to text or e-mail in complete silence. I've tried other touch screen phones, and hated them. I think the iPhone is probably the best touch screen phone available.
I also like physical qwerty keyboards if they're well designed. I hate phones where I have to press hard on each key to get it to register.
23I had a touch screen on my Treo then I switched to a Blackberry and will never go back. I've tried the iphone and it is just too finnicky for me.
24Well, I like both!
I have an iphone and I love it! I mean, it was kind of difficult at the beginning, but now I'm a pro texting fast with the touchscreen! and I do have big hands! so, I think it depends on each person
25Well I have an iphone 3g but it was not the phone I wanted. For my birthday I asked for a new blackberry since mine was a year old, but my dad surprised me with a iphone. Which I really like but I'm very into texting which is very hard on the iphone due to the virtual keyboard.
26My LG Voyager has both which I love, but I prefer the physical for almost all my texts and e-mails. It's just easier.
27i have a samsung blackjack and really enjoy the physical keyboard...it's not that i don't like the touch keyboard (BF has a iPod touch) and they're both equally user-friendly, but there's just something about having a 'rea'l keyboard...
28im a physical keybored kinda gurl, BIG fan of the pink blackberry curve!
29I am an iphone user and it took me a while to get used to the touch keyboard.
I had a BB Pearl and hated the keyboard.
30i have an iPhone and i think that it's a bit more challenging to text from it compared to what it was like with a physical keyboard. i'm a BIG TIME texter so this was kind of frustrating when i first got the phone, but i guess i'm learning how to adapt.
31i hate the touch screen keyboard. i'm always hitting the wrong keys and it annoys me.
32I learned how to type on my iPhone really quickly, after like a week, I could type faster on it than I can on my computer (and I'm a SUPER fast typer!)
33i have the htc touch and while im very happy..i hate txting since its soo hard to do so with a touch screen
