I always hated my high school and college Spanish assignments for one simple reason: I can never remember which keys I've assigned special characters to. I think I've probably googled "ñ" and "í" 300 times each. PC users can check out the Character Map utility, which gives you special characters which you can use any program. From the Start menu, select Programs, Accessories, System Tools, then Character Map. Use the drop-down menu to browse the fonts. Then, when you find a character you want to copy, click it, click the Select button, then Copy. Click Close, return to the program you were working in previously, and press Ctrl+V to paste the character into your work.
