Even with my vast knowledge of fonts, there are just too many (and so many more created each day) to know what each and every one is. Sometimes you're either curious about what a font you see is, or you want to actually use it.
The website My Font is your new aid; they have a webapp called What the Font, which allows you to upload a JPG or enter a URL with the font, and it will try its hardest to identify it.
If the font you selected is not a known font (like the custom one created for Blueprint magazine, seen here), it will suggest a few different fonts that are close. Fontabulous!

Alexander McQueen
Just Cavalli
Ernest Jones

1I use it all the time. It can be a big help! I'll have a client come in with something they need recreated (that in a *sigh* flatten jpeg image) and I need to figure out the font. There is just too many out there to remember.

7are there really people out there that are super into what fonts are being used? i guess if you're designing a webpage or something, and you're taking in elements from other sites that you like, then it makes sense, but honestly i think that it's just as easy to check out fonts from a drop down.
8Hi ilanac13. I think you are absolutely right. Most of the time, it is better to develop your own design using your own font choices.
I use what the font when I am asked to match a specific company or brand's advertising style. It also helps when you are trying to rebuild a logo.
