I've always known that girls love video games. Just ask Ingrid Diaz, who is co-editor of Play Girlz and a self confessed gamer addict. She uses her website to prove there's no such thing as a "girl game" or even "girl gamer" and she does a darn good job. Apparently, Diaz is not alone - recent statistics are slaying the stereotype of teenage boys being the only ones who play video games. In fact, NBC recently reported that Deputy Attorney General Tonya Sapp is one of a growing number of women finding an outlet in the world of video games. Here's more:
"It helps really to relieve stress," said Sapp. "Sometimes I come home, I've had a bad day - you know, I run around the countryside and shoot something to relieve tension. That's really what I like, the shoot-'em-up games."
The story goes on to prove that Sapp isn't alone. Apparently women over 40 actually make up the largest percentage of gamers who play online games. According to the Entertainment Software Association, about 23 percent of gamers are boys under the age of 18. They are easily outnumbered by women over the age of 18 at 30 percent. Watch the news report with Sapp here.

I've always enjoyed those "shoot 'em up games!" I remember Wolfenstein back in the day, along with Doom and a personal favorite Duke Nukem.
1ALSW, I used to play Wolfenstein and Doom too! I loved them!
It's good to know there's more ladies that are turning into gamers. I feel like a total gamer geek since I have GameBoy, Nintento, Super Nintendo, Nintendo64, GameCube and XBox. (I really, really, really want a Wii)
2I recently met a game designer for EA -- a woman! -- and she said the target demographic for games is actually women over 30. The guys buy the stuff and may be the first to try out new games, but over time it's the women taking over these games and buying all the extras. So that's why first-person shooters aren't the best-selling games, but the interactive/control-your-fate ones are.
I personally LOVE the racing games, but don't play very often. And I admit, I totally had the Spice Girls video game for PlayStation! Who else is going to 'fess up to that one?

Oh yeah. Wolfenstein in God mode. DOS were the days. Ooh, punny!
4I'm a gaming groupie. I love watching people play games like Resident Evil 4 and being a backseat driver....it's a total rush. I just have never had good controller/eye coordination.
5My guy is always trying to get me to play games as a way to "bond" with each other. I appreciate his enthusiasm, but I don't really have the patience. We now share our love of the Wii, and enjoy trying to beat each other at Bowling every night.
6I am a gamer, too. I have played Everquest (I started it from almost the start) ... switched to Horizons ... then to Everquest II ... over to World of Warcraft ... and now to Vanguard. I love it when Hubby and I can play together ... it just makes it more fun and it's a great way for us to spend time! I can't stand shoot 'em up or sports games ... but other than that, love to play - PC preferrably but I'll get into a good console game, as well.
7I like playing video games with my boyfriend. It's a great way to bond. And the Wii at parties is SO FUN!
