This past July, a new law came into effect that now requires millions of Californians to use hands-free technology like headsets and bluetooth-enabled devices while driving. Well on Wednesday, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger began signing bills into law, one that includes banning text messaging while driving. According to SFGate, the bill SB28 will ban texting while driving and forces drivers to keep their "hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road," said Schwarzenegger in a written statement. Other states that have already adopted this law include Louisiana, Minnesota, New Jersey, Connecticut and Washington.

What I want to know is why this took so long - texting is even WORSE than phoning while driving!
GOOD.
Why do they needs laws to keep people from doing incredibly stupid and dangerous things? Shouldn't that be common sense?
About time. They should start banning texting here in NY too.
Well good. We need to minimize the amoutn of possible damage these crazy people can do.
Unfortunately, they do have to pass a law in order to get people not to use their devices while driving. Hope they pass it on MA as well.
lol - i love your choice in photos!
Glad it's banned there...it should be everywhere.. this needs to be a nationwide law - not state to state.
Agreed, it's about time. How is that any safer than talking? Either way is a distraction. 100% of focus should be on the road. The end.
So what are they going to ban next? Eating while driving? It's going to be interesting to see how strict cops can be. I have a smart phone. So I look at my phone for directions sometimes and then if I need to write down a thought I can do that too. What if you are just reading a text you received? Whatever to make some headlines I guess. At least California has a budget in place now.
good! they should ban doing ANYTHING while driving! this will for sure bring down preventable car accidents. unfortunately, most people have to have laws to not do stupid and dangerous things while operating a potential deadly machine. stupid things like putting on makeup and eating while driving should be banned too. get up earlier! don't risk people's lives.
hella people are still doing it!
I think it's a good idea...texting while driving is far worse then talking on the phone. It will be interesting to see how exactly they enforce it.
well i kind of think that this is a no brainer but i guess that if they have to make the law then it's not nearly as obvious as i thought. i live in NJ (on the weekends when i go to my mom's) and i think that jersey has always been a state to have strict cell phone rules...and to know that we're not the only state - that's a good thing.
regardless. there are many people in california that still talk on the phone headset free and will continue to do so. in fact, its become more unsafe because while they are doing it they are nervous to see a cop, and are more frigidity. i dont understand why people can't just leave their phones in the bags or something until they are parked.
