It's battery operated and has a motion detector sensor, so it'll follow folks around the room — of course, you could use it outside as a theft deterrent, but it's much more fun to see your buddies squirm, isn't it? I actually had a retail job where they plastered these all around the stores to spook potential stealers, so it's kinda funny that they are predominantly used as a scare tactic product.

2I think it looks so obviously fake that it probably wouldn't deter too many thieves (except the dumb ones on world's dumbest criminals).
3I really enjoy having one of these. I also have the little bubble "camera." They're both mounted in my classroom - a computer lab where children sometimes vandalize and occasionally steal food from my fridge. The rest of the school has cams, so why not me? They think it's the same system. The blinking light and motion detection is the cat's meow. I will never ever admit to them being fake and they're up so high I get away with it. Shh, don't tell.

9my neighbor had one...it even had a small red blinking light...looked real too...after he put it up he stopped having problems..
10for some reason - as much as i can appreciate this - i don't really like it.
11My mom runs a private school that used to be in kind of a bad neighborhood, and the fake security cameras really helped drive away the drug dealers in the park across the street.
12it's a good idea, its kinda like a placebo.
