At last week's Let's Rock event, a little thing Steve announced was overshadowed by stuff like new iPods and a fix-all iPhone update: Genius! Part of the iTunes 8 update, Genius is a fun new feature for iTunes and iPods, which, I admit, didn't impress me at all when I was first hearing about it.

How silly I was! A week later, I'm obsessed with Genius. Why? Getting suggestions of music to buy is OK, but I really took the perk of having automatically-made playlists for granted. As someone who listens to my whole library on random at work and with the iPod on my iPhone, Genius brilliantly puts together stuff that sounds great together and somehow matches my mood. How does it know, based on one song, exactly what I want to hear next? I guess that's why they call it "genius."
Seriously, sometimes I get so blasé about new technology and gadgets, wanting to see bigger faster and stronger all the time that when something comes along that's so simple, I forget how much little things can make a difference.
So tell me, are you impressed by the little Genius like I am? Or is it just another thing that makes you go 'hmmm'?

I LOVE iTunes Genius!!!
1I like it a lot so far!
2No! Zune is way better!
3I haven't done the update because the last time I updated iTunes my Vista didn't like it at all. Damn!
4Not sure why I'm so resistant to iTunes, but I won't use it. (Maybe because you have to install it just to see what they have?)
5i've been completelyyy obsessed since i got it, but it keeps putting the same songs together, which is understable. i just get a little annoyed hearing "love and memories" every few songs
6I haven't used it and wish I hadn't updated the itunes. I lost a lot of artwork.
I'm still
made about that to use a new feature.
7I'm still very anti-apple/mac, simply because I'm raised as a PC windowsµsoft girl, although I won an Ipod nano 3gen. so i use it since my other mp3 broke, I like the simpicity of itunes, but because I don't have an iTunes account for the store, genius is not a feature i'm able to use, though I really don't care.
8I think its a good idea but I HATE that it doesn't work on your music in you iPod. I usually erase my music once it's on my iPod so I don't take a lot of space on the hardrive. But when your iPod is plugged in and you click on a song, Genius does not work. Stupid!
9i haven't updated by itunes because of the mandatory Bonjour and Safari and other crap they cram in there making the file 64 freaking MB.
10It's not THAT great. But it's fun and fast
11Really, emms? Because I do the same thing with deleting a lot of the music from my computer. With the exception of the music I've bought off of itunes that is. I guess I won't even try to use it now. haha
12My iBook is too out of date for the new update! I can't wait till I finally get around to getting a new computer! Just got to find the money somewhere first lol. Mac's don't come cheap!
13I upgraded but I haven't figured out how to use it yet! I should get on that!
14Sundaygreen: If you do this recent update, I have a feeling your vista will hate it too. Mine did.
I think Genius is a pretty cool feature but I don't foresee myself using it much.
15I think Genius is not that great--the songs don't actually go together that well. I just Geniused "I Can't Make You Love Me" by Bonnie Raitt and the first two songs were "Criminal" by Fiona Apple and "You Oughtta Know" by Alanis Morissette. How does that make sense??
16I like any service that would recommend music based on my taste like Pandora, Last.fm and now iTunes. I haven't played with it too much but from what I saw on the few times that I tried it, I was pleased
I wish I had the Genius on my 80GB classic ipod. That playlist would rock on long road trips.
17Yes, I like the Genius feature. It is still new so some songs don't really go together however it is almost always accurate.
18I think it is great. I not only like the genius playlist of music from my own library, I like the Genius Sidebar that shows me music that I might like. I have found so much!
19It's annoying me because when I use it to create a playlist it starts playing that instead of what I was listening to when I want is to see what it suggests. Urgh!
20Genius is great IF you're listening to a band that sells their music through iTunes. One of my favorite bands is AC/DC, which does not. When I'm listening to them, my Genius doesn't know what to do with itself and it just recommends whatever's selling the best.
21smart blonde, that's interesting, since my Genius uses all my music to make playlists, and most of my music is from CDs and non-iTunes sources.
22I love it!
23i love it! i didn't know about the new Dar Williams album that just came out, but it was in the sidebar when i was listening to Jenny Lewis, so i am totally psyched about that feature for sure! i love the playlists that it makes - i am always wanting to make playlists that have similar types of songs on it, but it is very time consuming, so this works out really well for me.
