Take it from Judith Martin, Miss Manners herself, that when it comes to friend requests on social networking sites like Facebook or MySpace, you don't have to feel obligated to accept these invitations — especially when it involves mixing business with pleasure. The columnist in the Chicago Tribune recently said this about turning a blind eye to certain invitations:
Miss Manners is not one to suggest ignoring invitations, but this is more of a commercial solicitation. Even messages such as these from people you know socially are so widely distributed as to resemble the sort of open invitations that teenagers post on trees when their parents are out of town.
So there you have it. You can ignore those little invites and not feel guilty about it. Why? 'Cause Miss Manners said so.

Nice. I agree...
1didn't need permission for this one!!! i always ignore friend requests from people that i'm only casually friends with or that i work with but they aren't in my social circle. of course, i wasn't always so discriminating and have done my share of deleting over the years. haha.

I did this today!
3I have students that find me on facebook all the time. I let them know that I can't be their friend now, but when they graduate they can definitely become my friend. If they remember me.
4I don't mind ignoring requests. I get a lot from ppl who weren't really my friends in high school but now want to be my myspace friend prob b/c my profile is private and they want to stalk me so I just ignore them.
so now I don't add unless I know them well.
5And once I added someone I didn't for sure know and I deleted him the very next day b/c he was sending me insanely sexual comments. like 6 in 4 hours.
Of course it's ok! Actually I need to go through and do some "cleaning up" ... aka unfriending!
