Usually I'm in awe of vintage typewriters because they're beautiful and hearken to a romantic bygone era of written letters and carefully taking time to express what you're thinking. Now, however, I'm in hushed awe because of who the typewriter belonged to: This was Marilyn Monroe's.

Part of the collection of photos shot by Mark Anderson after her death, the typewriter is just one of the things she left behind that you can squint at, appraise, and see the essence of the woman they once belonged to. I wonder what she composed on that typewriter, and to whom. . .

This is so poignant..my first typewriter was actually an antique one. I have a soft spot for them to this day.
It definitely makes you wonder what she might have put on her own pages. She certainly had a more interesting mind than she was given credit for at the time.
1This just took my breath away when I read her name embossed on the faded paper. I think her death kept all the good in her away from the world's eyes. We see the glamour, but I think deep down, this woman had a lot more to say.
2Oh my goodness. I love typewriters. What a special one for showing a side of an iconic woman that the public rarely got to know.
3i think this is brilliant. i agree with aistea311- her name on the old paper looks beautiful.
4Arthur Miller might have used that typewriter as well. "Death of a Salesman" anyone?
Maybe Joe DiMaggio used it too.
5Wow, thanks for this post.
6she's was such a beautiful and bright person inside and out
7being able to she her personal affects is really amzing, its just another step in uncovering the great mystery her life was
Wow, that's chilling. I want to touch it.
8Wow this is very amazing. I saw the picture originally in Vanity Fair, but I don't ever get tired of these rare pictures. Old typewriters are anazing especially one from a legend.
9Thank you very much.
At one point Marilyn wanted to be a writer and she would often share her writings with Carl Sandburg, her dear friend.
10Mrs. Murray the house keeper mentioned that she bought some writer stuff and put it in a room in the house.
