Overheard at the TechCrunch50 Party: Geekiest Pickup Lines

After I chatted up Samantha Ronson about what software she runs on her MacBook Pro at the TechCrunch50/MySpace party, I made my way around the Mezzanine — okay, I'll admit it. I was looking to see if LL was hiding somewhere in the crowd – and overheard some pretty interesting (and totally geeky) pickup lines.

The party was certainly a single girl's dream - with about 95 percent of the attendees being of the male persuasion - so although I'm not surprised that there was lots of flirting going on, I was totally amused by what I heard. I don't think you need a book to figure a geek out, but some of you guys out there may want to study up on how to successfully pick up girls! I have to admit though, it was kind of endearing to see them try. Check out some of my favorite pickup lines overheard that night when you read more.

  • While Pop and I were checking out the pics on my digital camera, a German geek comes over to us: "Hey Ladies, would you like me to take your picture?" Groan.
  • While standing in line waiting to get into the venue: "Hey, haven't I seen you on ValleyWag?"
  • While waiting in line at the bar: "So, which start-up do you work for?"
  • While walking through the crowd: "I just got these glasses, so be honest: Do these make me look like a nerd?"

Who is this girl that writes these articles? Is she the same the girl each time? I love her writing, she's like the Carry Bradshaw of GeekSugar! I've only been a member for a couple of days now but I'm totally hooked. I'm leaving for two weeks and am not sure if where I'm going will have an internet cafe, I hope so because I need my fix!
Have a good day everyone Smiling
    P.S. Who is LL?

Wow, some of these are straight from The Mystery Method. I wouldn't mind a guy asking if we wanted our picture taken as long as he wasn't smarmy about it.

I dunno, I give those guys major cred for trying though. In a situation with a 95/5 split you're in a situation where the 5% is going to be very defensive and cautious. I don't think that I would be able to think of anything to say that wouldn't be a bit odd/creepy in that situation.

Mystery Method! lol. Well, at least they tried. I would have to say the ValleyWag line qualifies for major geekdom. Love it.

Was this last night (9/10?) If so - I was there too and you are dead on! I was with my single co-worker and we were among the only ladies present.

Add this to your list: "So what Valley city are you from?"

Or: "Be sure to stop by my booth tomorrow so I can show you how this really works"

    Ah, life in geek-land...

Not so much a pickup line, but geeky boys in high school used to offer help in physics, comp sci, and calculus. One hacker boy even wrote some program to do something malicious and named it after me.

Is it wrong that I love flirting with nerdy boys? They're too easy!

here's the one that happened to me that gets me all the time. This is a guy talking to me on a bus in paris, france. He was one of the few people speaking englis. what are the odds?:
"You can lay your head on my shoulder. It's what it's there for."

LOL JediMasterArmi... Paris is full of pervs! When I was there a man tried to get me to let him use the pay toilet with me. When he asked me "Why not?" I couldn't even think of what to say in English or French.

And then there was the team of 2 guys that tried to get my mom (YES, my mom!) and I to go back to their apartment with them after introducing themselves, asking where we were from, and if we wanted to do it.

Nothing wrong with the first pickup line. It's happened to me and my sister one time, but the guy had his own camera so I figured he was just being friendly.
