Wow, Apple is really trying to get on the good side of its customers — first it offers two months free of the buggy Mobile Me and now it will replace your defective MagSafe adapter for free! I've probably had the white insulation go on about two of my magnetic power cords, so I know how expensive it can get to purchase a new one.
Once the wires get exposed, it usually renders your power cord unusable so this is indeed a nice gesture from Apple. If this has happened to you, Apple advises taking it to your local Apple Retail Store for evaluation and it will replace the cord for free if there aren't any signs of abuse.

They must still be having problems with defective mag-safe adapters. My MacBook power cord had a similar problem last year and, luckily, I had an AppleCare plan, which replaced it.

3My bf got his replaced for free. But now his second one is doing it too and he's more careful w/his than I am w/mine...just waiting for mine to go too. Glad they're doing this.
4Mine did this! It pulled apart near the brick part. It was like that for a long time, and I put electrical tape on it. It took some convincing at the Apple store for them to give me a new one, because they thought it was "just cosmetic" but then it stopped working.
Now I try to be careful and watch for the signs, but its good to know they're acknowledging the problem.
They didn't give me a new "duckhead" though, and the prongs won't snap in place so they flop around. Haha.
5I just had my MacBook cord replaced, and now my husband's MacBook Pro cord is doing the same thing! My old one literally melted from the inside out, scary stuff. Glad to see they're fixing the issue.
6well yeah - their product is defective and they STILL haven't fixed it. this happens SO much it's not even funny and apple hasn't recalled it? i think it's less than admirable that apple does not recognize this and replace it.
7i think there is nothing special about this or the mobile me thing - they messed up - they should have to cough something up for their mistakes.
my boyfriend's roommate's sparked and started a very small fire when we were in the dorms - just lit his comforter for a second - he saw it thankfully.
it is awful if they didn't - i personally have had two burn, my boyfriend one, and my father one.
i've had so much trouble with this and other stuff with my macbook pro i sold it and bought a pc. i'm still a little bitter about apple.
I think it would be nicer of Apple to stop selling defective products in the first place. I mean, really, you make it sound like they're being saintly.
8I had my magsafe adapter burn on me while I was trying to unplug it, so it actually burned my finger. The only that sucked was having to get it replaced because it was so far out from where I lived. And I definitely agree with madetoheal, they gotta stop selling defective crap like this.
9Pinkerbelle: That happened to mine too! Mine actually caught on fire!!! Sparks flew from it and black smoke and burny-plastic smell flew from the joint between the plug and the cord (this was a while ago on the iBook). It was especially weird because the wires were never actually exposed so I never knew anything was wrong. I guess I bent it around too much or something.
I called the guy and he was giving me crap about not being on warranty and such, but I was like, hey, I don't care if it's on warranty, I'm pretty sure my stuff isn't supposed to CATCH ON FIRE and he sent me a free replacement.
10OK, if your AC adapter- mac or pc - has exposed wires PLEASE don't just tape it up and try and keep using it. I had a cleaning lady vacuum the cord and chew it up a bit. She pushed it back under my table. I *just* happened to need to climb under there to plug something in and found the adapter melting into itself. Exposed wires are nothing to play with.
On a side note Apple gives us Mac dealers odd rules to play by occasionally- you have the ultimate power as the consumer and if your computer is out of warranty you can usually get these "defects" taken care of by calling Apple customer service. If you are not abusing your machine and it has something wrong you should fight for your rights.
11this is a nice thing. however, my one beef with apple is i have the macbook in white and it gets a crack right along the edge. I don't slam the lid closed or anything (i put it in my bag, in a cover.. because it's a laptop.. it's ment to be portable). I got it replaced when it was still under warranty, but then exactly one year later, the crack came back! of course, now my apple is no longer under warranty. Apparently they have fixed this problem on the new macbooks.. but now i'm stuck with this big ugly crack on my laptop.

Jennipoo, seriously it may cost you $49 to talk to apple on the phone but if you gripe enough to customer service you can probably get that replaced under a CS (customer satisfaction) code. As consumers you all have so much power, especially when it comes to Apple. (don't mention that anyone told you if you called they usually replace it as that will make it for sure that they don't help you- they are seriously suckers for sad stories and the fact that you had it replaced under warranty once and it is being noted as a widespread problem is HUGE).
