Watching Project Runway every week gives me the itch to pull out my own sewing machine, no matter how dusty it is! I'm getting inspiration from the show and from the geeky crafts I'm constantly seeing.
I've also noticed an influx lately of new sewing machines that are simpler, with big graphic buttons (dare I say more Apple-like?) — my own is a Singer, and I truly believe that I was as willing to tackle learning how to use my sewing machine because of my tech-savviness. I'm no stranger to manuals and complicated inputs, and when something breaks, I don't fear opening up my machine and going to town.
My hope is that the predicted home sewing revolution (prediction: Mine) comes about partly because of Project Runway, and partly because a generation of geeky girls is not afraid to buy and learn a foreign piece of machinery.
So tell me, do you have your own sewing machine?

I have one but never use it though. I can't sew. I thought I could, but I can't. lol
1Received one for my 16th birthday, and love it.
2I don't have one
3But I really want one!!!
I am SO GOOD @ sewing and could really put that sucka to use!
I love my sewing machine. It seen me at my worst, at my best and helped me get through my fashion course!
Yes, I am attached, I know lol
4No, I don't have one.
5My mom has one but I have no discernable talent for sewing. I can fix a hem or sew a button back on but I was never able to make anything that resembles clothing. I really love to crochet though, I like to make blankets, arm-warmers, scarves, and shawls.
6yes but sadly can not sew
7I had an awesome Singer sewing machine. It was made back in the 60s-70s, never broke once during my mom's use of it, nor during my use of it. But when I moved, I had no space for a sewing machine attached to a table. ::sulk:: I'm still itching to get one, but I don't trust the plastic looking new ones.
8I have the Hello Kitty sewing machine and it is truly adorable. I've done some amazing wrap skirts on it, but my designs are limited to items without zippers because I can't find a zipper foot for it!
9OoooH yes!!!
so I can call it a machine from the non-existing country - Yugoslavia. The
factory that made it is called Bagat, and the thing is working as it was brand new. I made many things with it. Often I make some changes to pants, dresses, shirts that I buy. I sew lots of
things for me and friends. Here is how this old thing looks like: http://www.bagatservis.8m.com/images/bagat_(1)_158x125.jpg
Singer is the best brand there is, classic and so reliable. Mine is not originally Singer but machinery is the same. It's 30 years old, it lived trough a war
Very soc-realistic, and communistic design - haha, at least they made something good and lasting!
10Yes I recently upgraded to a Viking Emerald and I love her.
11of course!! i've been using the same one since 8th grade, lol!
12I was part of a "stitch and b*tch" for awhile and looked into my own sewing machine but then I moved off to college and there was no room. Maybe when I settle down a bit.
13Ohyeah!! It was the first thing I really *Wanted* when I got married. I asked my granny (who used to sew religiously) for one for christmas. My Mother told her I would never use and not to get it for me. She did anyway. I have made SO much stuff with it that my mom got a little jealous and asked for one for christmas the next year.
I'm considering making my DD a pokemon dragoncon costume.
14I've somehow managed to break two singer sewing machines in the past. I'm hoping I don't break the new one I just bought /:
15d luck with Brother's! Only trust Kenmore's at Sears!
16Last comment missed the Bad, that is bad luck with Brothers, Singers too unless they are industrial, they suck. Kenmore at Sears!
17too bad the feminist movement erased the requirement that everyone learn to sew and cook! look where it's gotten us? poorly dressed and put together and severely overweight from all that eating out! i want to learn to sew more than a button or a hem. i'm thinking a few chic dresses, a matching bag and some ultra cute tops!
18My mom gave me her groovy sewing machine from the 70s. It has psychedelic orange flower patterns on it.
It's been on the frizz, though. Pulling thread so tight they keep snapping. Not sure how to fix it. I'm sewing by hand for now. It takes forever, but it's very meditative, and I do good work if I do say so myself. Heehee.
19There are so many geeky fun things you can make. For my bestie friend's daughter I am able to convert the maid of honor dress I wore to her parents' wedding for kimono slippers, and a kimono wrap dress. Then there is the cloth three-toed sloth DS cover I made my husband. The list goes on.
20I don't have one, but I really want one. I'm getting really sick of doing hems by hand.
For some reason, when my grandma passed away my effing grandfather decided to SELL my grandmother's pro Singer machine that did like 100 different stitches, the one I learned how to sew on. I was so sad that I didn't get that one.
I'd like to buy one now, but it seems like they're so expensive. That said, I haven't looked in about a year. I might just try to find a refurbed one now.
21I've been wanting to get a Singer sewing machine, the new simple models - I haven't sewn in a long time, but I would like to try my hand at making fabrics for the home, handbags, etc. My grandma had an old Singer sewing machine, the heavy, made of metal type - she could create magic with that machine - mostly clothes I'd point out to her on TV or at the malls:)
22Ooh i've always wanted one! My BF thinks im strange but I went to catholic school and learnt to sew and would love to make my own clothes again. Mum and I used to when I was little, and it was so much fun!
Ive hand sewed a few things since (decorative things really) and even had fun doing that
23I used to use my mom's sewing machine until my sister broke it. I customized all my tshirts.
24Now that I'm moving out and will have a lot of free time, I plan on getting a new machine and getting back into the fun crafty stuff!
Yes and I love it!
25I have one but I wish it was one of the new, super easy to use ones.
26looseseal--it sounds like your tension is off and may need to be adjusted. Should be pretty simple, check your manual for the type of fabric you're using, but if you don't have it anymore, just play with the tension settings and see what works. Good luck!
27I definitely went through a "sew my own clothes" phase in middle school, but I never thought it might be related to a tech interest
28I have a kind of crappy Singer that I got for Christmas to learn. It's ok, but when I get better, I really want a fancy, high tech Bernina,
29I have 2. I love to sew, but I haven't had time in the last year.
30I have one for hemming pants. They always make pants way too long for me.
31I own a used Singer sewing machine...
Most are so expensive now, but luckily I found one that is effective and cheap..
32My mother was a sewing machine saleswoman. Ending up with a sewing machine is unavoidable with her. Sewing talent, however, did not come as she had expected.
33I have one but have no idea how to use it. I've tried a few times and every time I try, I end up frustrated and angry. It's been in the garage for a while now
34my mother had an antique singer when i was growing up (the kind that wasn't electric, but used the manual foot pedal).
we also had an electric kenmore, which i still have and love.
35...i was so upset when she sold the singer, though. you could sew AND get exercise while doing it!
I'm no expert with one, but I have one. I also have a surger, which I LOVE. I haven't used them in a while, last time was to make cushion covers for my new place a few months ago. I should whip it out, but I don't know what to make.
36My family used to have a sewing machine, but it was really, really old. I think my cousin has one now and my mom and aunts and grandmother just sew. I would get one, but I think I would accidentally sew my fingers together.
37I started to sew crazy fleece hats regularly with my mom's sewing machine last year. She got so tired of me borrowing it that I received my very own for Christmas! I've kept it very busy making hats to sell at a few local events and conventions since then. It is one of my favorite gifts of all times right next to my Nintendo DS.
38I ran my first one into the ground and am onto my second one. I'd love to get a quilting machine to go along with it.
39Thanks, geeksugar, I've been trying the tension knob, but it tightens up by itself after a while of sewing no matter how I turn it. It's weird. Maybe it needs some WD40. 'Cause everything can be fixed with either duct tape or WD40... XD
40I do have a beautiful antique Singer from the 1950's...but it needs a lot of work before I can use it. I need to do some research on that one!
41I got a sewing machine for Christmas a few years ago. Me and clothing don't mix too well- a make a lot of mistakes (the seamripper and me are old pals) and am really sloppy when I sew, but I like making things of the purse variety. I've made a purse, two swingbags, and a laptop case.
I'm sure Project Runway has a lot to do with a "sewing revolution". I learned to sew in 10th grade in a class called Clothing and Design. I haven't sewn in a while, I altered a bathing suit strap that I got back in June, but I really like to sew. I wish I had space to keep my machine out so I could do it more.
When I'm rich and famous, my house is going to have a craft room.
42Yes and I use it often! I use sewing as a mode of relaxation and a second business!
43I have one but I can't use it. :/ Not properly. I can never thread the thing!!
44I don't have one, but really want one i was looking online for one earlier today.
45Technically I have one, but it's about 90 years old so I don't use it. Strictly decorative.
I really wish I had one though. I used to have a cheap one, but it broke after only one big project, a seat cover. I have a dozen things I'd love to make.
46My grandma just gave me hers. It is a Sears Kenmore. She used it to make my mother's clothes in the 60s. It had been in her closet for years. She just stopped sewing because it became such a hassle to set it on the table. The thing weighs like 100 lbs. I hope I can find the manual. I am trying to figure out how to oil it. I am sure it is from the late 50s or 60s and runs great. I am so excited to get started! I have so many great ideas!
