I've heard this term used for stuff besides CGI and robots, too - I think it can also apply to mannequins and dolls and such, which would explain my intense fear of Chucky until I was 17...

It describes the point of "realism" an animated character gets that is well...creepy in our perception.

Cartoony is better in some cases!
