One of my biggest pet peeves is people who recklessly ignore acceptable online etiquette and fail to start their instant messages with a friendly "Hi!"
What I do adore are status updates that let you know if friends are away from their computer and when my chat buddies put up quirky status notes or share the song they are listening to. Do you set status updates on IM, Google Talk, or another chat platform?

ha! I used to have a pet peeve with people who just said hi and didn't get right to it, but I have simmered down since moving to the West Coast. Mainly because I didn't have a choice.
1im a big fan of the 'status updates' and away messages on AIM.. its usually song lyrics or a movie quote, but thats just because my life is rather uneventful
2i do but mostly so my friends aren't talking to me when i'm away from my desk. they might think i don't love them! but i only use goggle talk and only have a few friends on it.
3oh i know! i have someone who does that, starts a conversation without saying hi first. its rude right!
4Our intranet messenger at work has a setting to allow your "status" to be updated with what's in your Outlook.
If it wasn't for that, people may get annoyed with my lack of responses.
5I do status updates a lot usually, but I've been lazy as of late.
6I have to admit to being non-specific with my away messages. Usually I just put "away" when I'm away from the computer or busy, or sometimes put a link to my twitter. This is usually because I'm not always sure what I'll be doing.
7I don't do specific messages but I do put use away/busy/in a meeting status.
My boss will sometimes put in her status - back momenteraly. Dude, I don't need to know if you had to go to the ladies room or the copy room.
8sometimes but not always
9I don't know why I do this....but I do let everyone know what I am up to
10Is it just me or do I not think that it's necessary to say "hi" when you start an instant message conversation?
There are a few close friends I IM with several times a day, every day, and we hardly ever say "hey," we just say what we want to say.
