A couple of weeks ago, I talked about a study that was conducted by CinemaNow shows that 94 percent of people surveyed think that renting a video from a store or even getting them through the mail from a service like Netflix will be the next tech dinosaur to be extinct. Movie downloads, they cited, are better for the environment. While that very noble reason is a bonus, I began downloading movies because of the convenience.
Obviously, it's great to have it both ways, but the results of CinemaNow's survey surprised me, because most of the people that I know who download movies are doing it for the convenience. So tell me — if you're a movie downloader, what is your main reason for doing it: The friendliness to the environment, or the fact that it's so easy?

I'd like to find out WHERE people download movies from. I use Hulu and Netflix, but I'd like to find somewhere w/ a slightly better selection that's not too pricey. Any suggestions?
1I've had netflix for years. I like the convenience of watching online, but would like to see better new release selection. After running all of the smaller shops out of business, the Blockbuster in my town closed last year, so now the nearest one is like 15 miles away.
2I download because it's free. Oh crap, wait. No, no that is why. I checked on the amazon unbox downloads, and whereas downloading a dvdrip is 700~ usually, an amazon unbox is around TWO GIGABYTES, it's insane to me. Unless they can bring sizes of movies down, I'm not doing that.
3I don't know what the karma is on double-posting, but I also have Netflix and my way of seeing it is, They're going to bring me mail anyways, and if Netflix wern't in that building or whatever, whoever /was/ would have to send out mail, so why not let Netflix send me movies in the mail, from a car or van that is going to do that route every day anyways?
4I rent the movies and TV shows by downloading it. But if I want to own movies, I simply buy them. Like nintennuendo said, storing movies on your computer takes too much space.
5I download for the convenience. I rip movies I buy too, since it's just easier to have my library on my media server, which is several terabytes large.
6I gotta agree with nintennuendo too. The mailman comes anyways, can't really stop it. Plus, depending on where you live, it can be worse for the environment leaving your computer on so long if your state or province doesn't have a green option in producing electricity.
7take up too much space and take too long. plus i like to interact with the people at the store. i actually like people. don't want to cut them out completely.
8The problem with downloading movies is that cable companies are starting to limit bandwidth usages a month and charging a fee if they go over. Time Warner has already started testing this in select cities, , and other cable companies have said they plan to implement this themselves. We've already gotten a letter from Comcast telling us to use less or they will shut off our service. We only downloaded a season of a tv show this month.
The bandwidth limits are so low that just a few movies a month could cost you money. This also goes for gamers, but that's a different topic.

Our whole house is wired (tvs to pcs etc) and we have two internet connections so you can guess my answer - yes I do and its convenient! Be happy to pay if I could get the movies the way *I* want it, WHEN I want it, but since thats never going to happen. *shrugs* not my loss.
10I usually just use netflix, but sometimes i rent on itunes if there's a long wait for the movie.
11Not to be green but to save my green on late fees. I am the worst at returning movies. I did the blockbuster online thing and would keep movies for months. When I lived close to blockbuster I would occasionally go turn them in for another movie but then I had to get those back to the store as well. At $20 a month I just wasn't using the system to my advantage. Now that I am using iTunes I have seen quite a few more new releases

nintennuendo -- I think your complaint about movie size is totally valid, but the answer is better internet & faster computers, not to compress the movies further. I guess we'll have to see what happens with that...
