If your first reaction to seeing Matthew McConaughey with his camera around his neck is "Tourist!," then you're in good company! I thought the same thing, even though I have to cop to wearing my camera around my neck — sometimes. If I have my little point-and-shoot camera, it's always in a case in my bag when not in use, but for my big, digital SLR, it's a different story.
When you take a short break from shooting photos, you're a little less cavalier about putting an expensive DLSR down just anywhere, but if you know you'll be taking more photos relatively soon, it's a pain to put it all the way back in the case.
So there it stays, dangling around my neck like a big, dorky necklace. But whatevs, it's safe. Sometimes I shoot with it around my neck, which ratchets the geek factor right up.
As for our man Mateo here, I have to give him the same pass I gave David Beckham for wearing a cell phone clip on his belt: Hands-on daddies need to be hands-free!
But tell me: What do you do with your camera, SLR, point-and-shoot, Polaroid, Flip video camera, etc.? Do you wear it around your neck or wrist, or always put it away when it's not being used?

I don't own a big SLR camera.
P.S. Does Matthew McConaughey ever really look like he "belongs" anywhere? He kind of has that permanent "tourist" look to me.
1I proudly wear my SLR around my neck. Geeks are cool.
2I was just at Lollapalooza this past weekend and I have to say I had my camera around my neck. It's just impossible to have it anywhere else especially if you're constantly trying to snap pictures of the bands. If it's out and ready it just makes like easier.
3When I'm using my point and shoot I usually just hold it in my hand unless there's a chance I'll get jostled and drop it, then the strap goes around my wrist.
Seeing as my lenses are worth A LOT more than my DSLR body, I put the camera strap around my neck, and hold the body and lens close to my hip at all times to protect it from getting bumped around (plus who wants a big camera bouncing around?) If I'm not using it for a little while it goes back in to the bag for protection.
4If I'm just taking a brief breather, or walking a short way to my next photo opportunity, I usually just sling the strap of my DSLR over my shoulder and cradle the bottom of the camera in my hand. I have no idea why or how, but it's perfectly natural and comfortable for me to do so.
If I've got a longer break than 5 minutes, I have a perfectly sized tote I take that acts as a camera bag (I have it empty except for the camera.). The case is a pain, but if I think I might be finished for the day, I religiously put the camera back into its case.
5i don't have an eye for photography so to speak so a point and shoot is perfect for me. i don't own a big SLR and even at work when i use one, it goes on my arm like a purse.

My slr is too heavy to wear on my neck, so it is always in my hand, with the strap looped once around my wrist. However, when I travel, I hook my camera to the shoulder straps of my Kata backpack- convenient and non-straining!
8i wear it on the side , as a purse ;p
9I just have a canon point and shoot, I keep it around my wrist with the strap, or in a wristlet in my purse. It's my baby
10I ALWAYS carry my Canon point and shoot camera everywhere with me in a case inside my purse. So, when it is in use, I usually carry it from the hand strap when I know I'm going to be taking several pictures. If not, I'll just put it in my front or back pocket for easy access.
11When I have my Canon DSLR, then definately, around my neck! "Ratcheting the geek factor right up!!"
my compact is always in my bag as well as my 35mm. i don't even carry my DSLR with me anymore but when i do, its on my shoulder like a purse. its so much more comfortable like that instead of on your neck!
12I have an advanced P&S that's in a DSLR style, so I tend to wear it around my neck. There's not much else I can do with it. I will occasionally throw it in a larger purse if I really need to get it out of the way, but mostly around my neck. It's just handy like that. I'm not ashamed of it, nor do I think I look dorky. I look like someone who enjoys photography enough that I have a decent looking camera and want it close at hand.
13Okay...the proper way to wear a SLR camera is around the neck and across the body (like a messenger bag). Your camera can easily be stolen if you are holding it around your neck. It is also much more comfortable and easier to pick up in a hurry to catch a shot.
