Website of the Day: Cuil

The new search engine Cuil (an old Irish word for knowledge), has been receiving quite the press across the "Internets" today. I didn't know what all the hype was about until I gave it a try. Cuil actually searches more pages on the web than anyone else (over 120 billion) — that's even three times as many as Google and 10 times as many as Microsoft. Rather than deriving search results from those that rank high, Cuil actually finds websites based on topics, content, and relevance by sorting web pages into groups and categories. This new way of searching helps you refine searches and get you to what you're looking for faster. And since it was created by three former senior Google employees, you're guaranteed a search experience that actually works!

To learn how to post your favorite websites to our Website of the Day group, read more.

I know that this long list looks scary, but trust me, once you get the hang of it, it'll be a snap the second time around.

  1. First of all, join the Website of the Day group.
  2. Click the pink "Share" menu on the top left side of the page.
  3. Choose "Blog" and “Regular Post.”
  4. Give your story a “Title.”
  5. Fill in the “Body” with a link to your favorite website and the reasons why you love it.
  6. Click “Next."
  7. Choose the audience for your story to “Website of the Day” in the drop-down menu
  8. Add keyword(s) (for example mine for this photo was "Website of the Day").
  9. Change channel to “Technology and Gadgets.”
  10. Fill in tag field with relevant tags.
  11. Click “I’m done” to submit content.

hmm, i hope this gets big and firefox incorporates it into it's browser or if they make a toolbar. because i think i'd only use it if it was toolbar since i'm lazy. it sounds really neat.

It keeps giving me this error message:

No results because of high load...
Due to excessive load, our servers didn't return results. Please try your search again.

Also, for the searches it does work on, it doesnt return the results I'm looking for.. I think I'll stick to 'ol reliable Google.

My coworkers and I tried it out and found remarkably unreliable results (think: no results for "Chuck Norris"). Obviously they should have released it in Beta and let users beat out the bugs before they tried to take the place of Google.

I just looked at it briefly, im not sure I like it. After you search, the part that shows the results is very narrow. I also don't like the columns.

I tried quite a few searches on it today...

    I was not impressed.

I don't like the way it lists results on the SERPs... And after "googling" (I can't not use that term!) a few friends' names on it, it returned the most random results... Many of which had nothing to do with my friends.

And when I googled my own name, it returned the Facebook page of someone I am a friend with.

So far, it is "NOTHING SPECIAL."

BGR gave it a big thumbs down because practically everything you searched came up with a big nil- nothing found. Even when they searched themselves (Boy Genius Reports) it found nothing. So much for searching more websites than google.

Like Neko, I've got hopes that it'll work out, but right now it's still not quite there.

I searched for 2 websites earlier. It found articles listing those sites, but didn't turn up the actual site itself. And it was running awfully slow.

I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt and try it again over the coming months. Hopefully they'll get the bugs worked out.

Like many others, my searches came up with either nothing found (for very common terms), or not very relevant results.

UGGHH...I tried it without looking at the comments first and got the same thing. Maybe they will work it out soon seems like a good idea though.

I tried it, and while my searches didn't come up with nothing, I didn't like the way the results were presented. And some of the claims on the site go from the unlikely to the ridiculous, to the impossible. (Other search engines gave up on the idea of indexing the "whole" Web for reasons other than just because it's big, including that it is not just difficult, but impossible.)

I tried it yesterday as well, and had horrible luck searching for things that come right up in google. I googled myself and no results came up even though I have a fairly common name. And my blog didn't come up at all, even thought it's one of the top results in google. I don't think I'll be switching anytime soon.

"you're guaranteed a search experience that actually works!"
Erm, sorry, but it doesn't even pull up the stuff I usually rely on Google to bring up in a jiffy.

And I don't care for the squat columned presentation, either.

The search does not work. It provides strange results with images that don't relate to the site at all.

Like everyone has said - it's completely inaccurate. They clearly got ahead of themselves and shouldn't have been so quick to claim that it would scour the web better than google. What good is that if half the search results have nothing to do with the search term? And a lot of times the pictures that go with the search result have nothing to do with the result itself.
