Do You Use TiVo or Your Cable Service's DVR?

Best girls' night in ever? Watching TiVo'ed Sex and the City reruns on TBS and . . . drumroll please. . . ordering something from Amazon, directly from your TiVo. News of TiVo teaming up with Amazon should be filed under "Why Didn't They Think of This Sooner," but I'm stoked that they did.

It also got me thinking, with this, the recently-announced YouTube access, and dozens of tips I have amassed over the years, that I just can't advocate for the standard-issue DVRs you can get from the cable company anymore.

No offense to those who go that way — I realize there are reasons for convenience and not wanting to pay the upfront cost of the TiVo device (although differences in monthly service fees are pretty negligible), but for most geeks who desire savvy features and a great interface, TiVo is the only way to go. So on that note, which way do you swing?

I don't watch enough TV to pay for stuff like that. I actually have to force myself to watch some TV every night (mostly while exercising) just to justify to myself why I pay so much for cable in the first place, lol. I really would get rid of it, but sometimes you just wanna sit and relax and watch whatever's on without having to wait to download something.

Dunno aistea...you can build up quite a large volume of tv shows on your standard cable issued DVR...probably the same amount as with Tivo.

I have Tivo from Directv. It's simply the best $5 a month I could spend, I suffered with taping shows for years before Tivo.

I actually have both. I'm pretty crazy about my TV so we have the Tivo in the bedroom, and the high def DVR in the living room. I love it because some nights, I can record 3 shows at the same time! Laughing out loud

i used to have dvr with cable. i got rid of it because the digital cable was a waste. i watched few of those additional channels. and then i didn't see the point in paying the digital cable price without the channels to keep the dvr. so i turned it in. now, i record things on my vcr. don't laugh because it works just fine. if i miss a show i usually watch it online when i'm bored. and if it's not available on line, which few shows are, i record it on my vcr and watch it later.

I have DVRs. You can record two channels at the same time, although I suppose it's a moot point now that we have three.

I have DVR with Verizon. It's cheaper than my previous cable-supplier Cablevision, but it's harder to use and has less space. If I had a choice, I would switch back.

Tivo is fantastic... I am not denying that. But losing the "On Demand" from my cable company to make the switch is a big deal.

Now just get me version 2.0 of the Netflix box with high def and THEN we're talking...

My bf and I built a Windows Media Center last year and haven't looked back. Say what you want about Windows, but this is the one place that they are leaps and bounds above what anyone else is doing.

I use both actually although I LOVE my TIVO so much more than my cable DVR. The interface of TiVo rocks - easier to find programs to record, rewind, etc. I have TiVo in my bedroom and the cable DVR downstairs where our hi-def TV is. However, the second I by a flat screen TV for my bedroom, I'm upgrading to TiVo HD - oh, and I still pay $12 a month for my service so I know TiVo loves me!

I have OnDemand but its not really the same. There is never anything I want to watch On Demand. I checked into adding the DVR option but its $15 extra per tv and my cable bil is already sky high so I have yet to add it.
