Is this a picture of a miniaturized London street? Nope, it's the real deal, just made to look like a tiny version of itself! The effect is called Tilt-Shift and it's totally awesome. You can make virtually any picture look like a scaled down version of the real thing with a few easy adjustments in Photoshop. Assuredly, once you bust out your own completed works, there will be plenty of praise from pals who are amazed with your digital skillz. Yes, that's skills with a z, 'cause you're just that good.

Check out this easy-to-follow tutorial to get you on your way. One quick tip though — make sure your photos of choice are taken from a higher angle, as miniature scale models are usually shot from above. I've already done several of my own landscape shots, so be warned, it's kind of addicting!

Vivienne Westwood
So you just blur out anything that would represent a size scale. Hm.
1It seems to work really well in the photo above but not so much in the tutorial photo with people... You could probably go in and blur their faces a little and make clothing one color to enhance the miniature people look.
2Holy cheese-wheels, that's nifty!
3Freaken Awesome!
4Sweet! I want to try this.
5Very, Very cool!
6Oh, very cool! Trying it out now.
7now that's a great way to spend my time today!
8Very cool! I can't wait to get home and try this out.
9So cool, I'm gonna try this out asap!
10totally nifty
11dude, that is extremely cool!
12Do they have something like that for Apple? I dont think my laptop has photoshop. : ( I feel left out.
13nv27: Adobe Photoshop is a Mac and Windows photo editing program. It retails about $600 - there is a student version for $2-300 I think. It is basically THE program to own if you are a graphic/web designer.
It was actually designed for Macs first and many people will say the Mac version is better for negligible reasons.
14Really good suggestion! Thanks..
15Very cool. I was just looking at some examples of these images on Flickr. Thanks for posting this.
16aww i really wanted to try this out bc i love photoshop but the site's bandwidth has exceeded. boo!

This one doesn't mention that you should increase the contrast (Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast - or - Adjustments > Curves) to help give everything a more uniform color too.
20ohh, i really wanted to give this a try, seems like ill have to wait a bit then..
21Oh for whatever reason Sugar didn't post my comment yet --
you can just do a google search for "Title Shift Tutorial" and there are a bunch!!
basically it's just making a mask in quick-mask mode; guassian blur the selection; increase contrast.

24At one point Photoshop Elements did quite a few things that Photoshop did at only $89.95. Not sure if it still that way.
