I can't imagine a more flattering compliment for the ultimate geek franchise than being commemorated on a mailbox. Oh wait, geeks don't send snail mail. Regardless, 2007 is the 30th anniversary of the Star Wars release and the United States Postal Service has decided to pay homage to the series by covering select mailboxes with R2-D2 shells.
Word is the robot post boxes will coincide with a new Star Wars stamp, which is to be launched later this month as well. "The rumors are no more!" said TheForce.net, claiming they should already be out in select cities. I have to say, I kept my eyes peeled all weekend in San Francisco but didn't see a thing. Perhaps I should look again before my next pint of Guinness.

I looooove Star Wars (and Star Trek)!! Please put at least one of these where I live! It's just too cute.
1These are so cool! I totally hope San Francisco gets all of their mailboxes turned into R2D2s.
2I know me too! I love this.
3I live in Sacramento and was walking to work and spotted one of these near the downtown mall and Zokku! I spent a good two minutes walking around it staring as if I were completely inebriated. I kept hoping that it would beep and chirp at me.
4I love these R2D2 Mailboxes! I found on in downtown DC and made a whole R2D2 mailbox photo set. Check out the security bolt on the droids - not even jawas are stealing these!
5ROFL ..... love it!!!
