We're all familiar with the second iteration of the iPhone-inducing hysteria, frustration, and seemingly never-ending lines (as of yesterday, there was still a two-and-a-half-hour wait at the San Francisco flagship store), partially induced by fears of selling out and unavailability. One of my co-workers was unsure if he'd wait in the line last Friday, but when he heard it might sell out, that made up his mind: He had to have it.
Similarly, I'm painfully aware of Wii shortages — I always have a friend or family member who needs one — so I make a mental note to grab one from a store if I ever see one, which seems crazy, I know. I even had friends who camped out at the Sony store when the Playstation 3 debuted — not because they wanted one particularly, but because it was rumored to be in short supply and at the very least, they could sell them.
Silly as it seems, sometimes shortages encourage you to buy, for fear that when you want or need it, it won't be there for you. Come clean — has the difficulty of getting a gadget made you want it more?

Honestly, no. I'm pretty patient anyway. So, if there was something I want that has a shortage I just wait until it is more available.
1No. It actually makes me upset and not want the product. I think it is ridiculous that it is so hard to find Wii Fits & Wiis. I have the Wii but haven't been able to find another Wii Fit for months. Meanwhile I will lose interest and never buy it.
2I think in particular the idea of buying things up to sell at a profit is out of order. I just don't think it's fair to real fans when they can't buy concert tickets within minutes of them going on sale, but there are plenty going for a 200% markup on Ebay etc. The same applies to things like Wiis and PSPs. My husband searched for weeks to get a PSP, eventually we found one in an airport store, but meanwhile there were plenty for sale online, if he was willing to pay more. And there were plenty of stories of parents paying over the odds to get Wiis for their kids last Christmas (although that brings up an entirely different conversation!).

4well..if i want something and than find out it may be in short supply than it i may want it more..like a ps3 or something.
5I decided the day the iPhone 3G was announced that I would be getting one - the timing was right with my current plan. I've stood in line for less exciting Apple products (like OS releases), so that really didn't make me want it any more or less. I waited until it was slightly easier to get a Wii and only waited in line about 45 minutes. However, I am also becoming frustrated trying to get a Wii Fit. I think waiting is really making me want it less!
6i dunno. i didn't realise the wii fit was going to be sold out everywhere and i wish i had pre-ordered. but yeah, i am sort of wanting it less knowing i can't have it for a long time. i don't want to wait outside the store first thing in the morning for one, even though i did wait for many hours on the first day for a wii.
7i definitely wanted a wii more since it was so hard to get and got really excited when i finally got one. i want wii fit but have not actually gotten around to even looking for one and i guess i wont even bother if they are hard to find. so it really depends on what the gadget is.
8I wanted a wii so freaking bad (and I got one as my bday gift SCORE!!!) but not because it was hard to find/get. I will admit to liking limited edition items but if I need to wait in line for hours for something that means I must want the item really really bad and truthfully I would never wait in a crazy long line.
9Target stocks Wiis every Sunday morning, at least in Southern California. They usually have something like 10. As for games, right now they're trying to stock the Wii Fits, and again, they'd be restocked on Sunday mornings. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find Mario Kart anywhere

No one in town seems to have a green EEE PC. I'll have to keep looking.
11Eh, not really. I still really want the Wii Fit, but the shortage of them in the states doesn't make me want it any more or less. I am however, pretty annoyed that our economy is so poor that the European market gets dibs.
12i am more seduced by the marketing. before i bought my ipod i obsessed over everyone that had one. every time i saw it on tv or placed in a show, i went nuts. so i finally bought one and now i've had 3 (i'm a clutz sometimes). but with the wii, i wanted it when i first saw it and was just waiting to save my entertainment money and then waiting to find one in stock
