Well it was worth the wait, because I finally have the iPhone 3G in my hands — and yes, it is much smoother and sleeker thanks to the new durable plastic encasing! This second generation "Jesus phone" is back in action, and holy moly am I excited to load it up with some amazing apps. Aside from the new apps that will keep me entertained, I cannot wait to test out the phone's built-in GPS. So far so good on browser speed (Apple claims it's three to five times faster than the first gen iPhone) and the audio quality has greatly improved. Stay tuned for a full rundown of its specs after I test out its goodies! Christmas in July rocks!

So jealous! I decided I didn't have the attention span to buy first day. I can wait. Maybe.

I got the same one! I love this phone. I missed out last year, and I'm so excited to finally have one. And it's so much faster than the 1st gen ones I've played around with.

Any good ideas for pink leather cases? I got the Sena Ultra Slim Pouch (arrived last week), but it's too much of a hassle to get it on and off, plus it's not as bright a pink as I'd like.

I like the Vaja cases, but don't want one with a front flap, and they have only 4 styles at the moment. I almost ordered the iVolution SP, but the flap made me stop.

I also really liked the style of Griffin Elan Form in pink, but the trim is brown, and I just don't like that with the black front.

What to do, what to do...

I didn't feel like standing in line so I ordered one from an AT&T store, it'll be here tuesday. I got the white one. Smiling

What kind of box is that geek? The grey one that is.

I went to the mall today, where we have an Apple store, and there was a huge line right next to Borders. The line had to be a small distance away from the actual store, for the other stores wouldn't have appreciated the line that would have blocked the entrance to their stores.

Congrats on your fabulous new iPhone. I, too, am jealous. In a couple of years I will be able to subscribe to AT&T. Perhaps by then I'll have the next generation iPhone with me. Smiling

So my decision not to stand in line ahead of time only led to me still standing in line from 10:30am to 5pm. With a 6 month old baby no less. It was easier last year when he was still in my belly Eye-wink I got the white as the black ones were so smudgy. I also bought a clear plastic hard case but I think I'm going to investigate a protective plastic decorated skin of some sort.

My white plastic seems to have a bit of a molding defect right at the seem to where it meets the chrome. Not a big deal but I think I want to log it with Apple in case I ever need to take it in for service. I would hate for them to site abuse.

So didja get lucky and get it OK? When I got Hubby the first iphone we were thrilled you could set it all up at home...so were the store employees. I had a feeling this time 'round would be chaotic...hope the bugs get worked out. I guess I'm sticking with BB.

I got to the store after a 45 minute drive and forgot that there would probably be people waiting. Dumb I know but I was like 25 people from inside the store so I didn't mind. What I did mind....being told from the very beginning I could purchase the phone even if I am an authorized user then after waiting 2 hours and one person away from inside told that no I could not and it had to be the primary account holder. Needless to say I am the proud owner of the 8 gb 3G iphone. I honestly did not see the need for a 16 gb one.

I am wildly, WILDLY underwhelmed by the iPhone and the craze surrounding it. I mean, yay for cool gadgets...but (maybe I need to use the 3G?) I wasn't impressed enough with my friends' iPhones to buy one...is it really worth all this or is it just a status symbol?

    mod16, I think you're going a bit too far.

Do you even have an iPhone or used one for more than a few minutes? If not, then you really have no standing to tell others that "an iphone is not worth it at all." That's even ignoring that what something is worth to someone is entirely subjective.

The iPhone 3G may not be for you, but you don't need to pass judgment on or insult ("iDiots") others who want one. After all, their waiting in line and spending their own money has nothing to do with you and won't hurt you any. If a person wants to stand in line to buy something he or she wants, that's their choice. And if that person thinks paying $199/$299 plus fees every month is worth it, who are you to argue that it's not? Some people, myself included, do a lot of work off the iPhone, and if spending a few hundred dollars makes me more productive (and I can throw in a little fun in my off time as well), then it's money well-spent (and definitely not "a waste").

Laugh, say to yourself that it's not worth it to YOU, and go on living your life. But you don't need to call names. Besides, some extremophiles may have waited ONE week (not weeks), but they're there to make a point or fulfill some goal ("First in line!"). Most people waited only a few hours.

Moreover, most gadgets you buy today will be replaced, if not next year, then in some product cycle refresh in the future. That's the nature of the consumer electronics/computing industry and everyone knows that. Does that mean you should never buy anything because, so long as the world doesn't end, it's already obsolete and will one day be replaced? I hope not. If I want a gadget now, and I have use for it, I'll buy it now and worry about future versions when they come.

    Hey Mod16. Jealous much?

    Macgirl I'm with you...troll sighting.

I LOVE my Macs (since 1984, baby. Showing my age.) and am looking forward to getting an iphone like hubby. I was prety freaked by the horor stories...perhaps if I wait a week things with OS2 and the AT&T stores will die down. APPLE RULES!

My husband took the day off and waited in line for 8 hours. He has the 16G Black one and I have the 16G white one. I love it, now I just have to find the perfect case we have a couple of the Belkin Silicon ones that we're using but it doesn't cover the whole front and I'm super anal about my toys getting scuffed. To mod16, really how is 160 bucks a month a lot for service for a family plan? Then again me and hubby are glorious DINKs and can afford to drop money on toys.

mod16, so somehow you're trying to tie Apple and the iPhone to the languishing economy? Somehow, I doubt Apple has anything to do with rising fuel and food prices, or the mortgage industry meltdown and home foreclosures. I'd also like to point out that NOT spending (or the diversion of moneys spent to cover rising costs, i.e., fuel) is a factor in contributing to a slowing economy, hence the government's attempt to "stimulate" the economy by putting those rebate checks in American consumer pockets.

I don't ever endorse spending beyond one's means, and I didn't in my previous post. Nor do I think buying an iPhone should ever be someone's number 1 priority. But if someone decides to spend a few hundred dollars on a gadget and feels it's worth it to him/her, why does that take away his/her right to otherwise complain about the status of the economy? I'll leave the question of how other people spend their money to themselves.

It's weird seeing all the reply comments without the original incendiary remarks.

I had been waiting to buy an iPhone, but this week I decided to buy a 1st gen instead of the 3G. Cheaper phone, cheaper plan, aluminum back, and since I bought it before July 11th I'm still eligible to upgrade for $199 if I decide to down the road.

90% of what's great about the 3G is available in the 2.0 software for all the older models.
