Ahhh, philosophy! Today I tackle the question: If it's ugly, will you carry it? Laptop bag manufacturer Skooba has started producing bags, which will be TSA approved and can be carried through airport security so you won't have to remove your laptop from them. Awesome, right? Except, um, they're pretty fug.

Here's the thing. I've been schlepping a laptop through airport security for a long time, and I've got it down. Whether it's a sleeve or a separate laptop bag, I can breeze through security because I'm ready to unlock and unload. The point is: If this fabulously convenient no-remove laptop bag stays unattractive, I can leave it. Call me vain, shallow, whatever. You see how I drool over sexy laptop bags here all the time, so why would I suddenly switch because I'm saved a millisecond in the security line?
But am I alone? What would you pick, especially in the realm of the security line: Convenience or attractiveness?

Hi, all, this is Michael from Skooba Design (yes, really, I promise... I read everything on the web every day). I happened to catch this posting and... for what it's worth... just wanted to point out that the photo is of a very unfinished pre-production sample (as the watermark indicates). The finished bag will not be "fug," we promise--though of course everything is a matter of taste. Among other things, the pockets and front panel will be different, the handle more substantial, the zippers and hardware all matte nickel plated, and more. If any of you know Skooba Design (www.skoobadesign.com, not meant to be a shameless plug), you hopefully know we try to do our own thing, be interesting, hopefully cool, and generally not "fug." So, please stay tuned for the next chapter.
Safe travels,
1Michael
I don't have a laptop bag. Isn't it easier to just stuff in in your suitcase or another bag? Though, I always love the fab ones you post on here geek!
2I actually have two types of laptop bags. One is my travel/secure bag with lots of padding and protection. Not the most attractive bag but it does it's job. Then I just recently ordered the JoJo Carrie Light Brown bag, so that I have my 'pretty bag'.
They don't make too many pretty bags for 17" laptops so I have to take advantage of this one.
3I need a happy medium of both!
4But if I can't get that...then I would just find the most convenient bag out of the pretty looking ones
Hey. If skooba is making TSA approved bags, WHO GIVES AN EFF ABOUT LOOKS. I work a lot from my laptop, and travel often with it, and keeping it safe/convenient is absolutely ABSOLUTELY priceless to me. Sometimes functionality looks better than "fashionability"...like when you see someone limping in heels that she can't walk in. That being said, if something can be both beautiful and functional..well that would just be wonderful.
5I want it to look good and be functional.
6Both looks and comfort are nice.
7both!
8There doesn't have to be a choice
9Looks + Convenience, def.
10I would just get the TSA approved ones for getting through security. Then use the more fashionable ones the rest of the time.
11Frankly, there is no guarantee the TSA agents manning your line will recognize *any* bag as approved. My bet is you will still have to remove the laptop from the bag to please those who ultimately control whether or not you make your flight.
So I'll continue to carry my pretty brown suede bag on my commute and through the airport.
12I just got a new laptop and decided I needed to have a bag. Searched and searched and decided on a Crumpler bag -- nice and a bit sporty. The one I liked the best was blue and yellow. The only one like it. Little did I know it was a limited edition Tony Blair laptop bag (The Blair Squirrel)! Crazy, but cool too.
13I want something slim and sustainable. Just got a Greensmart laptop jacket (after seeing it on one of the sugar websites, actually!) and I LOVE it. But I think they may have discontinued them!
14Attractivness although I would prefer a combo of the two choices.
15I'm all for convenience. I'm so bloody tired of the lines and lugging all my stuff in and out of the bins, I really don't care what it looks like.
16I have a huge laptop and a little one. The huge one gets its own bag, since it won't fit into most bags/sleeves/cases anyway. The little one gets a sleeve b/c it does.
