Would You Stand in Line for a Gadget?

macgirl's comment about the iPhone 3G yesterday made me think: Yes, I love the excitement of the lines that form when a new, hot gadget is released, but would I stand in line for one, otherwise? It's pretty discouraging when you realize that you can walk in the very next day and wait in no line to get your new toy!

Last year, I loved the energy of being caught up in downtown San Francisco, right outside of the Apple store: the countdown of the doors opening, the employees cheering you into the store, the first customer emerging victoriously with his iPhone! It's all so geek fabulous, but then I look at the people in New York City, already lined up for Friday's release of the iPhone 3G, and I know that you couldn't pay me to sleep on a sidewalk (and watch out for the inclement weather coming your way, New Yorkers!) So, tell me: Would you stand in line for a gadget, and why?

Frankly it really isn't worth my time. So I wouldn't bother with it. Beside it's good to hear feedback from friends and reviews before making all that effort.

Even if I was getting an iPhone, the Rogers store sits smack in the middle of a parking lot. Not in this sun.

A friend of mine camped out for Star Wars Episode III, and some other friends drove there right before the show and met him on the way in.

I don't think I'd do that. If I can preorder something to assure I'll get one I'm satisfied, that's what I did with Wii Fit.

The only thing I have stood in line for was a Nintendo Gamboy Advanced, but that was completely on a whim.

Did it last year when the iPhone first came out, don't know if I'd do it again.

On the one hand, it was quite an experience camping out overnight with fellow geeks, taking in the euphoria, and drinking the Kool-aid (okay, maybe just figuratively, but the Apple Store did bring out water and drinks for the line!). It's something I'll always remember. On the other hand, camping out on a street sidewalk while passersby look at us strangely, having the Muni buses nearly skirt the curb and nearly hit me, dust and exhaust blowing on me and my MacBook -- sucked! And then, like macgirl pointed out in her post, to walk out of the Apple Store and find out that people who jumped in line at 6 pm, when I was there since before 6 am, got there's just the same ... well, that had me thinking what I'd just waste my day for. Still, I grudgingly admit the iPhone was worth it.

I'll skip out on the festivities this year though. With the lure of the new price point and word being that in-store activations are required for all iPhone purchases, and each activation taking 5-10 minutes at best, the Apple and AT&T stores are going to be a pain to step into this Friday.

Never. I have better things to do than sleep on a sidewalk. And these folks in NY obviously have nothing better to do with their week. I hope they didn't waste vacation time to wait for a phone.

For certain things yes, it's part of teh excitement. I did it for the Wii when it first came out (skipping all the rush to find them) and for the Apple store that opened up in West Ed mall. I'd never stay over night, but I've definitely enjoyed waiting in the line. You meet soem great people.

I love gadgets like any geeky girl does but there is no way I would ever waste my time sleeping on the sidewalk or some craziness for a toy/phone/game/etc. I like my comfort so usually I go the following day to get it.

I would rather go to the apple store and pick up a pretzal from Auntie Annes in the same time frame. Ironically, in this day and age, waiting in line sounds so 90's. As if they are waiting to be the first to get Madonna tickets.

Well I voted no, and as soon as I clicked vote I remembered that one year that I waited outside of Best Buy at 5:00 in the morning a week before Xmas to get a 360 for my wonderful loving husband, which I did not actually get that day. I was 3 people away from getting one. Argh!

However, 2 days before Xmas, I read rumors online that a Circuit City in downtown NYC had them, and one of my friends went down there and managed to score one for me. w00t!

But for an iphone? Never. And I doubt I'd ever do it again for a console.

The day they announce that light sabers will be going on sale, I will get in line. Camping out for it? Absof*ck*nglutly. It would be so much fun. All the mock light saber fights, and people dressed up as their favorite characters.

Then imagine when the first people get their light sabers? The ACTUAL light saber battles! Totally worth the wait!

Other than that... I don't see any other gadget being worth waiting in line for.

I missed out on two Wiis, so never again. Waiting in line sucks, and it sucks more if you don't get what you were waiting for. I'll just wait out the rush, thanks.

I like to see what the general consensus is about it and then save up if I absolutely NEED it.

My husband got up at 5 am on a Sunday to wait in line for the Wii when it first came out and I thought he was nuts. Over a year later people were still really struggling to get their hands on it so it seemed like he made the right choice.

When I made the decision to stand in line for the iPhone last year it was due to me knowing Apple and how they work. They NEVER have enough supply and it takes them months and months to catch up. I had waited for that damn little phone for many years (rumors of it and then the official announcement) and I wasn't going to not have one the day it came out. I didn't camp and would never do that. I barely made it in line from 9am to 6pm as I was preggers at the time. I felt like a bit of a tool afterwards considering the availability but I wanted it and did what it took to ensure I got one. I will not be pre-lining up this year but we will go down Friday and get one (or at least attempt to). If I don't get one of Friday I will live, my current iPhone still works and if they release the 2.0 software then I can at least play with that for a bit Smiling

    no, i think it's stupid.
it's not like their limited edition things, they'll still be around for weeks and weeks. to me it just seems like people just want to flaunt that they have something before someone else.

when really the people who wait get the last laugh cause usually the first batch sucks and you hear all the things wrong and those who wait get the fixed batch at a lesser price.

I probably would wait in line for something I wanted desperately. But if it was DAYS! I would go ahead and shell out extra cash to buy it from Ebay or something instead of camping out on a sidewalk with crazies.

No, I have better things to do with my time. Even sleep Eye-wink I don't stand in line waiting for movie or book releases either.

not sure i'd do it for gadgets, but i do wait in line for random things i want during the day after thanksgiving sales (although this past year was for a tv at target so i guess that counts!) the only other line i remember hanging out in was for the last HP book but that was more for the experience (it being the last one and all) than anything else. and i did really want to start reading it at midnight lmao. and i don't think i've ever waited more than an hour and a half for anything.

I did. I wasn't planning to but I wanted the iPhone so I drove to a Cingular/AT&T store one town over to see what the line was at. It was 5 pm and there were like 20 people in line. I figured the store would open at 6 so it wouldn't be too bad of a wait. At 6:45PM, I exited the store with a new iPhone.
