Xobni: Big Brother, or Useful Email Tool?

What would you say to an add-on for your email client that would track what times you read your emails at, what time your co-workers read their emails from you, the time of day you liked to compose emails, and how long it takes you to reply? And then have all that info given to your boss and co-workers?

Because to me, it sounds a little like 1984. This is what Outlook extension Xobni promises to do. By piggybacking on your email application, Xobni is an investigative, analytical little bugger that makes me kind of nervous (Oy, remember Beacon?). There are certainly useful tools from Xobni, too; when you get an email from a contact, your email history with them will pop up, as well as their contact info and LinkedIn profile. Xobni also stresses that you must opt-in for their service to analyze your email habits.

Still, I'm a little wary of something tracking my every email move. What's your take?

Way back when email was invented I worked in an office that had an Exchange server. We had this ability, it was nice to ask someone what they thought of the project update and they would be "oh it was great" and you knew that they actually deleted the email without reading it. I get a request for this feature from time to time, but my customers are in a mac environment and there's not a real way to do that seamlessly. I would love to have this for my clients. Love to know if they are reading the important updates that is happening with their computer systems. That way if I send out an email about an upgrade we are doing where they could lose data I would know ahead of time if they didn't read it and give them a call.

Kind of creepy although one could argue that company emails are company owned and so whatever they wanted to do with those emails such as tracking is a-OK. But from a user standpoint, I can see a riot from a mile away.

Hey Guys, Matt Brezina, founder of Xobni here.

Sorry if we didn't make this more clear, but with Xobni your personal data never leaves your own personal computer. Xobni does not share any information about how you use email with your boss or other people that you email. We wouldn't like that either! Xobni is a personal productivity tool that you can comfortably use without any fear of your personal data being shared.

If you want to check out Xobni's fast search, conversation threading, and quick attachment management you can download it at www.xobni.com for free

    Thanks,
    Matt

I'm looking forward to the possibility of Xobni being a part of gmail. Because frankly, I feel like it's hard to keep all the information in one place.

I do know that there's also a toolbar for Outlook with just LinkedIn information...

I used it for a while, it's semi-useful...but again, looking to see when Xobni hits my inboX!

I tried Xobni for a while, and tried to get my boss to use it. Thought it might help him organize, and he's always hunting for the last email he got from a customer. He wasn't interested, and after a while I took it off b/c it was cluttering up my screen and slowed down Outlook a bit. Just wasn't my cup of tea.

Xobni is amazing- it makes finding old emails so easy and I love the stats that it throws at me (makes you think). If nothing, it's completely worth it for search alone.

It didn't feel big brothery to me at all since it's all on my own machine for me to look at.

groupwise provides this info automatically. it's great for checking on people when deadlines are involved. but it can be stalkerish.
