All Blu-ray issues aside I spend a lot of time concerned with my DVDs. Not by how good or bad the quality is, not by which titles I need to buy or rent, but where they go in my house. Personally, I'm attempting a library situation (that's a shot of my setup below) and pretending that they're as attractive as books, and OK enough to be put on display, but I worry I'm kidding myself.
I know that a lot of people are taking to Handbrake and ripping their DVDs so all that remains is an ephemeral digital copy, as I've done with my music collection, but I'm not ready for that. Many people just keep them behind doors and don't have to look at them, and others are getting rid of the case altogether but keeping the discs in a book.
What do you do?

I have them in a basket on my dresser.
1I have over 2000 movies and 5000 TV shows...yeah I've converted everything to digital:) I've got 5TB hard drives that they are all stored on and backups made.
I am freaking blockbuster lol.
2i love my movies so i put them on display on a bookshelf
3I have alot so I keep mine on a shelf. Plenty of people display their DVD's for themselves or the family in library order.
4I burn them and put them on the media server. It's much easier to pick titles that way. The actual discs go into giant binders, and most of the cases go into storage.
5After burning them I put them into those music CD packets that no one uses anymore (being the age of iPod/mp3 containers). It's kind of strange, because I now associate my Backstreet Boys case with Kill Bill Volume 1.
6i have them on display too, but i don't really like how it looks... some of the packaging is bright and kinda tacky, so it ruins the display of books i work so hard to arrange nicely.
i like the idea of keeping the discs in a book, but i wouldn't have the heart to throw the cases away because i like the booklets they come with...
7Yesterday I was reading that post on unplggd and apartment therapy
about converting your dvd library to digital and how to store your dvds
http://www.unplggd.com/unplggd/hard-drives/converting-a-dvd-collection-0...
&
http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/chicago/how-to/how-to-clear-the-dvd-clut...
and was considering it but I think I will wait until I ACTUALLY get an apple tv and when i really start having no space on my shelves!
8I've got them in boxes in the closet.
I'd rather have them on a bookshelf with doors. I need about a dozen more bookshelves...
9Some of my cases were breaking due to poor quality and frequent use. So when I moved I converted from display to a book, no regrets.
10I put them on display. I just love looking at my collection on display
11I have them inside a drawer underneath my TV and DVD player. I wish I could put them on display, but I live in a studio apartment and have way too many books and space is something I no longer have, unfortunately.
12Display AND stash my "personal library."
13Mine are technically on display (on my bookshelf, in my bedroom), but I only have about 10 dvds so I don't think they even count. If I had more, I would probably switch to a case thing, but they hardly take up any space so I don't mind them up there.
14I keep mine in a CD Binder
15I do keep mine out. I would just like to say though, I work in media preservation and dvd is a very unstable medium with a very short life expectancy. It is not a bad idea to back them up somewhere. And if you get really geeky, you can back them up to a hard drive and basically put them on demand.
16I store my dvd's in a CD binder and toss the case.
17So I do a couple of things.
We have some ripped that we watch through our Apple TV- this in my opinion is the best. You get an urge to watch something and you don't even have to get up from the freakin' couch, it's just there and ready. We haven't converted all of our movies (we have a TON) due to server space so I have an Ikea Billy bookcase with 7 shelves full of movies and tv shows. They have the glass doors on them and I want to find a way to line the doors so you don't see the crazy colors through them. With the movies that are in the bookcase we have them cataloged through Delicious Library.
18All my DVD's are right beside my T.V. and DVD player. I've yet to jump onto the Blu-Ray bandwagon.
19Does anyone know how to contact Geek Sugar? I have a tip for her she may be interested in! Please let me know! I have tried looking all over the site and I have yet to discover the contact information! Thank you!!
20Click on "geeksugar" (the name under the title of this post, not the picture or the header) and then click "private message me".
I have several of those CD cases that can hold 96 discs and I put them all in these. I moved recently so I kinda had to get ruthless and throw the bulky individual cases away. I did keep the ones that are really, really nice. But other than those few, all trash.
I'd like to go the "rip and toss" method, too. I'm surprised the MPAA hadn't gotten their knickers in a knot over people doing that, though. Or maybe they had and I just hadn't heard about it.
21We put them on display on our TV stand but because we have too many, some of them are in boxes.
22I keep my dvds on a shelf with the spines in rainbow order so the collection doesn't look as hum drum as most dvd spines look.
23i have the "regular" DVDs in a binder or two, box sets get shelf time, and special collections get displayed. "regular" anime movies are kept in their original boxes, but get the shelf.
24I put them on display. I probably have about 300 DVDs+Blu-rays on the "book"case, and this is even after whittling my collection down and selling two or three dozen titles to Amoeba Music. To be fair, I've been replacing a lot of my DVDs with Blu-rays when I can, so I've just been passing on those DVDs to movie lovers who haven't jumped on the HD bandwagon yet. My collection is sort of a source of pride for me because I began collecting them years ago when I first started college, and over the years I feel as if what I have in my library speaks a little about who I am.
I curbed my DVD/Blu-ray spending when I joined Netflix though, but there are still must buy titles I have to have!
And like Macgirl, I've thought about going digital and on-demand with the AppleTV. It would go something like this: Grab a 2TB hard drive for the Mac Pro, start ripping away at my collection with Handbrake, pick up an AppleTV, and eventually have every movie, every tv episode I own on-demand through the AppleTV. What's holding me back is cost and the fact that AppleTV doesn't yet upconvert SD to 1080. I can wait. Meanwhile, my collection is sitting pretty in my living room!
25i have no idea! they're everywhere haha
26Cabinet under my desk, right next to the 'entertainment' area.
27My dvd library is under construction so far.
28i store mine in the tv cabinet. i found it at the thrift store and painted it black. it's so cute. and it has little mission-style bars that let you play peek-a-boo with the dvds. it works perfectly.
29OMG you have Half-Baked! "Abbazabba, you're my only friend."
We keep our DVDs in a media cabinet, on display. I wanted to go with the space-saving binder method, but my man likes having them out, so they're out.
30Must have in display...other wise I wont remember what I have and don't have and then buy it again while I am out...lol
31i love rewatching my movies on our tv. watching a movie on the computer every now and then is just ok.
32i love rewatching my movies on our tv. watching a movie on the computer every now and then is just ok.
33Geek! you have the same book shelves as I do!!
i tried to have my DVDs set up like
that for a while but then i got too many and had to put my Norrebo shelves against walls, so could only use one side -
i ditched all my cases, put my DVDs in alphabetical order in those DVD cases (zip-up rectangular ones) from IKEA (I have 5 to hold all my movies and a huge binder with plastic CD sleeves to hold all my TV show DVDs), and then also catalogued all my DVDs in Delicious Library, and use that to pick what i want to watch.
i am so impressed with Berlin's collection...but 5 TB Hard drives??? holy cow. wish i had that much money.
34oh, i also have about 300GB of movies and shows on an external hard drive in addition to physical movies.
35i put them on display. when people come over i want them to see which movies i have so we can watch them, have them borrow one, etc.
36I use the book, it cuts down on the amount of space required.
37DVD's are sooo old.
38.avi files are sooo much better. I have a player for them and it sure beats having tons of DVD's around taking up space.
I buy very few any more, preferring to download on iTunes. What DBDs I do have I put on shelves, spine out, like books.
39At first I felt really bad throwing away the cases, but I don't even have that many and they're just so bulky! So, I put them in a book. I still have a few cases lying around that I haven't been able to throw away, alas.
